Brad Foote Gear Works is hiring a Laboratory Technician in our Metallurgy lab based in Pittsburgh, PA. The Laboratory Technician is responsible for laboratory-based tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analyzing results in Brad Foote's heat treat facility. This role will provide all the required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

In this position, you will have the opportunity to:


  • Perform laboratory tests in order to produce reliable and precise data
  • Carry out routine tasks accurately and follow strict methodologies to carry out analysis
  • Prepare samples
  • Maintain and operate laboratory equipment, i.e. micro hardness testers, microscopes, saws, and polishing and mounting equipment
  • Record and interpret results to present to lab supervisor
  • Logging incoming samples
  • Cutting samples of proper size from appropriate location for metallurgical examination. Cutting technique will include abrasive saw cutting
  • Mounting and polishing samples
  • Performing hardness and micro hardness tests for surface hardness, core hardness and for case depth analysis
  • Etching of samples to evaluate inter-granular oxide depth, % retained austenite, % non-martensitic transformation products, and other microstructural characteristics
  • Technician will also be required to perform other QC or safety related functions as directed by supervisor or designee
  • Maintain supplies inventory and verify calibration of equipment
  • Ensure strict safety procedures and safety checks are followed

To be successful in this position, you will need:


  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on laboratory experience preferred.
  • Ability to use computers and perform mathematical calculations for the preparation of graphs
