Air Products is hiring an experienced Ammonia Superintendent for our new Gulf Coast Ammonia facility in Texas City, TX-home to the world's largest single-train ammonia (NH) plant. This cutting-edge site includes Air Products' largest Steam Methane Reformer (SMR), a high-capacity Air Separation Unit (ASU), ammonia plant, steam turbine generator, extensive utility systems, and direct connections to both the world's largest hydrogen pipeline and regional ammonia pipelines.

The ammonia plant is owned by a 3rd party, GCA, with separate environmental permits, but is operated by Air Products as part of the integrated operation of the overall facility.

We are seeking a driven Ammonia Superintendent to lead all aspects of the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the ammonia production units, ensuring adherence to environmental and safety standards, and driving continuous improvement initiatives. This is a high impact leadership role reports to the Operations Manager and requires strong technical expertise, excellent team management skills, and a dedication to operational excellence.

A core responsibility of this role includes managing the Operations and Maintenance Agreement between Air Products and Gulf Coast Ammonia (GCA). You will act as the primary liaison with Advario, overseeing the transportation and storage of ammonia in the Ammonia Storage Tank. This role plays a vital part in safeguarding the facility and surrounding community, while also maintaining stakeholder relationships and ensuring secure, compliant access along the ammonia pipeline routes.

Key Job Responsibilities:
  • Administer and comply with the operating requirements under the Air Products - Gulf Coast Ammonia Operations and Maintenance Agreement.
  • Lead a team of 10-12 employees including a Site Supervisor, 3 Shift Leads, and Operating Technicians and ensure the Ammonia Plant and Pipelines are staffed with qualified, trained, and experienced personnel.
  • Serve as the site lead for the site's Emergency Response Team.
  • Respond decisively and quickly during periods of crisis or emergency to plan, organize, and execute the proper corrective actions.
  • Own and manage systems, processes, and procedures required to operate the plant per the Operations and Maintenance Agreement between Air Products and Gulf Coast Ammonia.
  • Improve and develop EH&S procedures to ensure the protection of employees, contractors, the community, and the environment.
  • Develop and maintain relationships and ensure access to Ammonia Pipeline routes with landowners.
  • Ensure the Ammonia Plant is adequately integrated into the overall GCA site.
  • Direct and monitor Ammonia Plant production to efficiently meet customer requirements.
  • Identify improvements to Ammonia Plant to enhance Air Products & GCA's utilization of the assets.
Required Skills / Abilities:
  • Proven ability to safely manage Ammonia strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of systems, tools, and processes that support plant operations and budgeting.
  • Skilled in building and coaching teams to achieve operational excellence.
  • Strong understanding of commercial agreements and the ability to translate them into effective operational strategies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the capacity to engage across technical, operational, and commercial functions.
Education, Licensing, and Experience Requirements:
  • 6-10+ years of experience in ammonia plant operations preferred or similar chemical/petrochemical process plant operations.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent preferred but not required.
  • High School Diploma/GED required.
Work Hours & Benefits:
  • This is a full-time, direct hire, salaried exempt position based on-site in an industrial plant facility in Texas City, TX.
  • Minimal travel requirements.
  • 24/7 on-call requirement.
  • Must be willing to work overtime as needed.
