Position Highlights

The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix (COM-P) is seeking a vice chair of Faculty Affairs and Ethics in the Department of Anesthesiology. This is an opportunity for an outstanding leader with a national reputation as a respected and accomplished clinician, leader, educator and collaborator with a proven track record in helping lead large, complex anesthesiology organizations.

The Department of Anesthesiology was formally established on July 14, 2025, with the goal of rapidly developing a residency program and expanding perioperative programs at Banner - University Medical Center Phoenix (B-UMCP). Additional expansion and collaboration with existing Banner Health facilities in Phoenix is also anticipated.

The vice chair of Faculty Affairs and Ethics (VCFAE) will manage clinical faculty, certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) and other healthcare professionals within the Department. This individual is responsible for departmental operations and scheduling, resource management, patient care and coordination, program development and strategic planning. This individual is also responsible for promoting a professional and respectful work environment while continually advocating for quality, safety, reliability, value and process improvement. The VCFAE will partner with other members of the leadership team to represent the Department's interests in interactions with B-UMCP, Banner Health, COM- P, the U of A College of Medicine - Tucson and other regional partners. The VCFAE will also partner with existing private practice-based anesthesia groups currently servicing B-UMCP and other Banner Health facilities. This is a leadership position, and it is the expectation that the incumbent will develop plans in conjunction with, and follow policies established by the Department of Anesthesiology, COM-P and Banner Health.

The VCFAE will work in strategic consultation with the department chair, the Office of Undergraduate Medical Education and the Office of Graduate Medical Education. The VCFAE will help lead a strategic plan to establish an anesthesiology residency while also serving as a mentor for faculty. The VCFAE will assist the chair with establishing and sustaining collaborative relationships with university, clinical and community partners.

The successful candidate will fulfill the responsibilities of a faculty member by actively participating in teaching, clinical service and/or scholarly work, and must qualify for an appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Promote a professional and respectful work environment.
  • Advance quality, safety, reliability, and continual process improvement as departmental pillars.
  • Enforce established standards for perioperative anesthetic care.
  • Assist with integration of teaching, research and scholarship in the clinical practice setting.
  • Represent departmental interests in interactions with COM-P, Banner Health and private practice/private equity-based anesthesia groups and providers.
  • Serve as the Chair of the Appointments, Promotions, and Tenure Committee.
  • Provide mentorship to junior faculty regarding career development and leadership advancement.
  • Lead departmental efforts at clinical program development and workforce planning.
  • Partner with the chair and departmental administrators in the annual budgeting process including initialization and year end reconciliation.
  • Act as departmental liaison between faculty/staff and the Department's professional billers and coders.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in ethics pertaining to perioperative anesthetic care.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

To perform this
job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty
satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the
knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Hold an MD, DO or equivalent
    degree from an accredited institution.
  • Be board certified in
    Anesthesiology and be eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in the
    State of Arizona.
  • Be eligible for medical staff
    membership at B-UMCP.
  • Be eligible for a University of
    Arizona academic appointment at the associate professor level or higher.
  • Have experience and recognition
    in the development and successful implementation of new educational
    programs.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Have experience with hospital partnership and collaboration.
  • Have experience serving on education or curriculum committees.
  • Exhibit skills in diplomacy, and the ability to influence decisions.
  • Demonstrate expertise with information technology clinically as well as metrics/analytics.
  • Demonstrate ability to obtain and apply knowledge to complex matters and exercise decision-making and problem-solving techniques.
  • Be able to partner to achieve outcomes and results, manage projects, develop programs, and execute plans.
  • Demonstrate high level of proficiency in developing and maintaining productive interpersonal relationships among medical staff members, departmental leaders/directors/managers and employees, university, health system and hospital administrators.
  • Be able to effectively deal with and interact with a diverse population and to effectively handle interpersonal conflict.
  • Have a working knowledge of quality improvement processes.
  • Demonstrate skills in principle-based negotiation, persuasion and organization.
  • Be able to speak publicly.
  • Have a working knowledge regarding the use of descriptive statistics to analyze and draw conclusions.
