Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant - Urology - South Metro

University of Minnesota Physicians seeks an enthusiastic, independent Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner to join a growing Urology team in the South Metro Twin Cities.

Practice Details:

  • The candidate will be required to perform history and physicals, comprehensive review of systems, and thorough chart reviews as well as prescribing medications/ therapies, ordering diagnostic tests, performing minor therapeutic procedures, providing peri-operative evaluations, and first-assisting in the OR. Function at a very high level of autonomy. Although independent, this candidate will resource close MD availability in decision making.
  • Practice will incorporate outpatient, inpatient and OR first-assisting responsibilities.
  • Outpatient focus will be general urology. Clinic will be in Edina and Burnsville, MN and primarily in-person with virtual options in the future.
  • Inpatient responsibilities will include post-operative assessments, rounding on an inpatient Urology cohort, and completing hospital or ED consults at the M Health Fairview Southdale and M Health Fairview Ridges Hospitals.
  • Operating room first-assistant responsibilities will be at Fairview Southdale Hospital.
  • Work 40 hours per week, schedule varying between 7AM -5PM Monday through Friday. Will include some weekends. May include infrequent cross-coverage responsibilities at other M Health locations, such as Maplewood or Woodbury. With appropriate notification, specific hours/days may be adjusted to support patient, clinic and staff needs.

We're looking for a PA or NP who is:

  • A graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant or formal Adult Nurse Practitioner training program.
  • Eligible or is certified through NCCPA, ANCC or AANP.
  • Licensed or eligible to acquire a license and prescriptive authority through the MN Board of Medical Practice (PAs) or MN APRN license or eligible to acquire a license and prescriptive authority through MN Board of Nursing (NP's).
  • Able to meet threshold criteria/qualifications for credentialing and privileges.
  • Preference will be given to those with surgical or Urology experience, but this is not required for consideration.

Cares for a specific patient population using advanced practice knowledge and skills.

  • Leads/Assists in the care of patients to facilitate patient access and quality of care delivery.
  • Assesses and reconciles medication use for every patient, as appropriate.
  • Reviews recent care plans and orders and assesses patient response in alignment with the patient care goals.

Scope of Practice and Care Expectations

  • Obtain and maintain MN license as a Physician Assistant in accordance with MN Statute 147.09A and in compliance with the MN Board of Medical Practice regulation.
  • Practices within the PA established scope of practice in accordance with their education, training, experience and adhering to professional laws and regulations.
  • Responsibly prescribe pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic agents and interventions as appropriate for each patient.
  • Maintain a current DEA registration, if appropriate, for the purpose of controlled substance prescribing, while following current legal and evidence-based standards of prescribing.
  • Collaborates with the patient and the health care team members in developing realistic care expectations, and revises patient specific plans of care to achieve healthcare goals.
  • Performs appropriate medical procedures within scope of practice as defined by MHFV Credentialing and Privileging process.
  • Completes and maintains proper and timely documentation of all patient care encounters in accordance with organizational standards.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, approved support persons, and all members of the interdisciplinary care team. This can include, but is not limited to, triaging call, electronic messages, completion of external forms or with referral sources and hospitals.
  • Facilitates care planning as appropriate for the patient and care team needs, to include patient/support person education, follow up planning and discharge orders/prescriptions/forms.
  • Demonstrates behaviors that support performance improvement initiatives

Manages patient care through appropriate use of available resources

  • Utilizes internal and external referral networks appropriately.
  • Functions within a team-based care model, interacting with all members of the team as appropriate for patient care needs.

Adheres and contributes to all system policies and practice standards for the benefit of effective, efficient, patient-focused accessible medical care

  • Aids in the development of standardized procedures/protocols for staff.
  • Supports appropriate billing for professional service and maintaining adequate knowledge of billing policies and procedures.
  • Assists with the preparation for JCAHO and other regulatory surveys.

Provides leadership for professional, clinic, and community relations

  • Serves as a resource and role model to all staff.
  • Identifies personal and or team learning needs and engages in continuing education for professional development.
  • Participates in professional organizations and/or local professional councils.
  • Provides continuing education learning to community and other professional groups as requested.
  • Maintain competency and professional development.
  • Maintains license, certification, and registration as required.

Performs other duties including Performance Goals developed by manager and employee and reported in the employee's Performance Review as part of UMPhysicians' Performance Management tools

  • Maintains core/universal competencies and completes any new required learnings.
  • Demonstrates all critical competencies and completes in a timely manner all new required learnings.
