Overview

As a Commercial Lines Competitive Intelligence Analyst, you will play a critical role in shaping product strategy by delivering actionable insights on market dynamics, competitor positioning, and agency and customer behavior. You will support efforts to collect, synthesize, and analyze intelligence on competitor products, distribution models, technology adoption, value-added services and marketing tactics, informing strategic decisions across commercial lines.

In this role, you will help maintain and evolve tools and processes for disseminating competitive intelligence across commercial lines and relevant business teams. This includes preparing quarterly intelligence briefs, ad-hoc research reports, and strategic summaries for senior stakeholders.

You will collaborate closely with product management, product councils, and cross-functional teams to ensure intelligence is aligned with the product roadmap and broader business objectives. You'll also engage with internal research teams and external industry forums to stay ahead of emerging technologies, regulatory shifts, and innovation trends in the P&C insurance landscape.


Responsibilities

  • Conduct Market and Competitive Research - Gather, analyze, and synthesize intelligence on customer needs, industry trends, and competitor strategies to inform commercial lines product and business decisions.
  • Monitor and Profile Competitors - Develop and maintain detailed competitor profiles, including product features, pricing strategies, distribution models, technology adoption, and marketing tactics. Identify strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT).
  • Develop Strategic Intelligence Reports - Create and maintain dashboards, quarterly briefs, and ad-hoc reports that translate complex data into actionable insights for product, underwriting, and executive stakeholders.
  • Collaborate Cross-Functionally - Partner with product managers, underwriting, marketing, and strategy teams to ensure competitive intelligence is integrated into the product roadmap and strategic planning processes.
  • Analyze Behavioral and Performance Data - Collaborate with analytics and product teams to interpret agency and customer behavior data, uncovering insights that support product innovation, pricing decisions, and go-to-market strategies.
  • Support Voice-of-Market Initiatives - Assist in designing and executing surveys, interviews, and usability studies with agents, customers, and internal stakeholders to validate hypotheses and uncover unmet needs.

  • Track Industry and Regulatory Trends - Stay current on emerging technologies, regulatory changes, and market shifts. Summarize implications for commercial lines strategy and share findings with relevant teams.
  • Contribute to Strategic Presentations - Prepare and deliver presentation materials that communicate competitive insights, market opportunities, and strategic recommendations to senior leadership and product councils.
  • Advance Research Capabilities - Continuously improve research methodologies and tools by collaborating with internal research teams and adopting best practices in competitive and market intelligence.

Knowledge and Requirements

* Business Acumen - Understands core insurance concepts including underwriting, pricing, distribution, and customer segmentation. Learns to apply cost-benefit thinking and strategic frameworks to evaluate opportunities.
* Industry Awareness - Demonstrates understanding of the commercial insurance landscape, including emerging technologies, regulatory developments, and market dynamics. Stays current through continuous learning and engagement with industry publications, webinars, and professional networks.
* Project & Time Management - Manages multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision. Demonstrates agility in shifting focus based on business needs and contributes to a responsive, high-performance team culture.
* Communication & Storytelling - Communicates complex findings clearly and persuasively through written reports, visualizations, and presentations. Tailors messaging for different audiences, from product managers to senior executives.
* Collaboration & Influence - Builds trust and credibility across cross-functional teams. Works effectively with product, underwriting, actuarial, and marketing stakeholders to ensure intelligence is embedded in strategic decisions.

Education and Experience

* Bachelor's degree required in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Marketing, Data Analytics, Political Science, or a related field.
* 3-5 years of relevant experience, ideally in competitive intelligence, market research, product strategy, or data analytics within the insurance or financial services industry. Internships or academic project experience may be considered for entry-level candidates with strong results.
* Analytical skills and ability to analyze data sets, diagnose opportunities, and convert results into business value statements.
* Proficiency with research methodologies/platforms and data visualization tools to communicate actionable results to wide audiences.

The actual base salary is based on geographic location, and the range is representative of salaries for this role throughout Selective's footprint. Additional considerations include relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, performance, and business needs.
