A Brief Overview
Responsible for daily clinical and operational activities of Clinical Nutrition services across the continuum of care, including inpatient & outpatient settings. This is achieved via the activities of program planning/development, regulatory readiness and quality monitoring & improvement to ensure delivery of high quality, effective and efficient clinical nutrition services. Employs, supervises, and develops staff supporting clinical nutrition services; prepares budget recommendations; develops, implements and monitors policies and procedures which support the hospital's mission.

What you will do

  • Works with leader to develop program initiatives to promote & improve the patient and family experience supporting enterprise initiatives.
  • Uses data to optimize & oversee scheduling and daily flow of patients in inpatient & outpatient venues including multidisciplinary clinics.
  • Develops & monitors appropriate scheduling processes to assure timely access to clinical nutrition services.
  • Develops guidelines to ensure appropriate staffing across all venues, including holiday & weekend coverage as needed.
  • Effectively & equitable manages staff scheduled time-off requests to balance employee benefits against staffing needs.
  • Ensures appropriate staffing levels by monitoring patient volume, staff schedules and productivity and responds appropriately to capacity management initiatives.
  • Supports, enforces & interprets enterprise & departmental policy & procedures.
  • Drives development of & compliance with policy & procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with accrediting agencies and regulatory bodies.
  • Provides for ongoing monitoring of department key indicators
  • Facilitates efficient operation of services by maintaining updated team communication tools, scheduling systems, documentation and multidisciplinary communication.
  • Leads optimization of the electronic medical record to support efficient operations.
  • Works with leader to develop operating and capital budgets in support of organizational targets by stated deadlines.
  • Monitors monthly financial performance, provides budget variance explanation & variance resolution
  • Uses data & works with leader to set staff productivity expectations.
  • Monitors staff productivity levels and implements service delivery model changes to meet or exceed targets.
  • Works with leader to support programmatic growth across inpatient & outpatient services that aligns with enterprise initiatives resulting in increased scale, volume & revenue.
  • Identifies and operationalizes expense reductions and improved efficiencies
  • Understands organizational systems & enterprise stakeholders & builds relationships to support business development & nutrition services expansion.
  • Works with supervisors to recruit, coach, develop & retain qualified, competent staff.
  • Works with supervisors to ensure staff meets regulatory requirements of the position.
  • Works with supervisors to ensure appropriate initial orientation & ongoing competency & skills development of staff.
  • Creates an environment that fosters teamwork, cooperation, respect & diversity.
  • Monitors data & supports the Safety & Quality Specialist in the development of quality improvement initiatives to improve patient care and clinical nutrition services.
  • Ensures compliance with all department & enterprise policies, procedures, regulations and accrediting agency requirements.
  • Ensures standards of care & conduct are consistent with hospital & regulatory standards.
  • Directs the provision of medical nutrition therapy by supervising the activities of Clinical Nutrition staff according to established policies and procedures & practice guidelines
  • Collaborates regularly with Clinical Manager & Safety & Quality Specialist to create & maintain patient care guidelines using evidenced based practice, benchmarking, & quality improvement initiatives.
  • Promotes family-centered, interdisciplinary, competency based patient care to ensure patient's nutritional needs are met, to foster interdisciplinary practice and to ensure alignment of Clinical Nutrition operations with the organization.
  • Develops & oversees supervisors, ensuring discipline-specific line of site oversight.
  • Works with Clinical Manager to ensure standards of care reflect current national guidelines, benchmarking, research & evidence-based practice to promote programmatic growth and academic affiliations.
  • Works with Clinical Manager to support clinically based research activities.
  • Represents CHOP Clinical Nutrition program through leadership-level participation in hospital committees or initiatives, local or national professional organizations or initiatives, continuing education events and training programs
  • Expected to engage in professional activities to maintain competency and continually advance knowledge in order to provide effective clinical leadership.

Education Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree Dietetics, foods and nutrition, business administration, public health or related area. Required
  • Master's Degree Dietetics, foods and nutrition, business administration, public health or related area. Required

Experience Qualifications

  • At least six (6) years Clinical or related experience - Required
  • Prior management experience - Preferred
  • Prior pediatric experience - Preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge and application of medical nutrition therapy in pediatric patients. (Preferred proficiency)
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing to patients and families, public, staff and physicians. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to organize tasks and work independently. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct the work of others. (Required proficiency)
  • Proficient with nutrient analysis software, Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative experience. (Required proficiency)
  • Proven ability to meet budget goals. (Required proficiency)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead by influence; consistently upholds CHOP leadership competencies, ICARE Values and service standards. (Required proficiency)
  • Ability to perform complex mathematical equations related to medical nutrition therapy. (Required proficiency)

Licenses and Certifications

  • Registered Dietitian (RD) - Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) - upon hire - Required or
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) - Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) - upon hire - Required and
  • Licensed Dietitian-Nutrition (LDN) (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 6 months - Required
