Your expertise will guide product development and upgrades, ensuring system safety, reliability, and performance.

You will tackle complex challenges that require creative problem-solving and critical thinking, allowing you to drive innovative solutions in a dynamic environment. Your contributions will be essential in maintaining the integrity and performance of these systems, making a meaningful impact on national security initiatives.

On any given day, you may be called on to:

  • Lead the electrical aspects of the NW stockpile system sustainment and product development initiatives, focusing on the warhead electrical system.
  • Serve as the system electrical lead within the department responsible for circuit design, analysis, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical components.
  • Facilitate the development of an instrumented JTA telemetry system to enhance system performance and data acquisition.
  • Manage work package agreements, project schedules, and budgets for assigned activities to ensure timely and efficient project execution.
  • Collaborate with system engineers to ensure a comprehensive understanding of integrated system requirements while maintaining a primary focus on electrical engineering tasks
  • Work closely with internal and external personnel, including DoD customers, contractors, and production plants, to facilitate effective communication and collaboration.
  • Engage with system customers and stakeholders to support the development, testing, and implementation of electrical system elements, ensuring alignment with project goals and requirements.
  • Analyze system performance through ground and flight testing, component-level testing, and simulation tools, ensuring that all electrical systems meet performance standards
  • Lead anomaly resolution teams through root cause analysis and explore solution options.
  • Prepare technical documentation, including white papers, presentations, and input for the Annual Assessment Report and other critical documents, to communicate findings and recommendations effectively.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite. Some travel may be required.

  • Active DOE Q clearance or equivalent.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Experience with project management discipline and tools, including managing work packages, schedules, and budgets effectively.
  • Knowledge of the Sandia National Laboratories (SNL) NW Product Realization Process, as well as the processes utilized by the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and the Department of Defense (DoD) related to nuclear weapons.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of complex electrical, electro-mechanical, nuclear, and/or mechanical systems.
  • Experience in directing physical and computational simulations and modeling to support engineering analysis and decision-making.
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering principles and their application to integrated system development and management.
About Our Team

The W78 Stockpile System Engineering team supports the nuclear deterrence mission through annual assessment of the systems safety, security, and reliability, while providing design agency engineering support for the production agencies. We partner with various organizations across the Laboratory, including other system groups, stockpile surveillance, materials research, science and engineering, and computation modeling and simulation to design and execute aging, reliability, and safety studies. Additionally, we engage with external stakeholders such as the National Nuclear Security Administration, Department of Defense and its contractors, Los Alamos National Laboratory, as well as the Kansas City National Security Campus and Pantex production plants, to ensure the continued success of the W78/MK12A mission.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
