Job Summary

Pharmacy Inventory Control Specialist purchases, receives, verifies and maintains medication inventories under the direction of a registered pharmacist. Performs same functions for any non-medication supplies. Maintain applicable records for purchasing activities.

This position assists in the provision of pharmaceutical services under the direct supervision of the Registered Pharmacist by performing the technical, clerical and manipulative tasks involved in storage and control, dispensing, preparing, and distributing all medications and pharmaceutical products for all patient age groups includes geriatrics, adult, adolescent, pediatric and neonatal. Work and/or performance shall conform to written established hospital policies and procedures.

Education/License Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited training program or two years of pharmacy experience, background in procurement preferred.
  • Registered by the New Jersey Board of Pharmacy.
  • PTCB preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assists in annual inventory.
  • Maintains and demonstrates knowledge in the following areas of Pharmacy practice: Calculations, Generic-trade name relationships; Special properties of IV admixtures; Stability's of IV preparations; Contraindications; Chemical formulas, abbreviations, common conversions and symbols; Maintains and demonstrates awareness of limitations of technicians.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area, replaces returns and disposes of non-reusable items properly.
  • Maintains competence in purchasing software programs.
  • Maintains purchasing files in an orderly fashion.
  • Maintains stock at appropriate levels.
  • Obtains medications needed on an emergency basis utilizing multiple sources.
  • Oversees recall procedures.
  • Processes all purchasing paperwork per policy in a timely manner.
  • Provides reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Under the direction of the Pharmacist, prepares medication for dispensing, maintains unit dose system and prepares IV admixtures in a timely manner when required.
  • Follows all procedures involved in the appropriate documentation of all medication errors and meets the required minimum documentations per employment status.
  • Makes every attempt to be knowledgeable of changing policies and procedures.
  • Under a pharmacist's supervision, assists in the restocking of emergency trays for patient care area.

  • Assists co-workers when appropriate.
  • Maintains the confidentiality, security and integrity for the management of associate/patient information according to policy and procedure.
  • Participates in on-going education and training related to organization and department specific requirements, including, but not limited to the safety and infection control management program.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as determined by the pharmacist on duty or other supervisory personnel.
  • Promptly answers telephones using proper departmental etiquette.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work alternating and rotating work schedules on short notice.
  • Willingness to work with attention to detail with the realization that errors may have serious consequences.
  • Remains pleasant and courteous in daily interactions with others especially under adverse conditions.
