Job Description
General Purpose of Job: Responsible for providing unit support and patient care under the supervision and direction of RNs. This includes providing constant direct observation of adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients who may be at risk of adverse events such as falls, self-injury, or harm.
Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis once orientation has been completed/competence has been validated for specific tasks. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Responsible for specific aspects of direct patient care and monitoring focused on safety.
- When assigned as a patient safety sitter, stays in constant view of the patient at all times.
- As directed by RN ambulates patient, assists with meals if there are no dysphagia concerns, uses appropriate distraction tactics when applicable (i.e. conversation, walking, games).
- May be required to provide frequent physical redirection of patient.
- Provide support on floor such as answer phones and call lights, take vital signs, check blood sugars, help with turns and transfers, declutter rooms/prep for discharge cleaning
- Other duties once competence validated may include transporting patients, watching tele, specimen collection (urine, nasopharyngeal swabs, phlebotomy), and 12-lead ECGs.
- Documents observations and care accurately and timely; immediately communicates significant information to RN such as changes in the patient's behavior or condition.
- Is an active member and contributor to the interdisciplinary team
- Maintains a calm, clean, safe environment
Job Requirements
| Work Experience |
* Previous experience in PCT, CNA, EMT, Military Medic, MA in absence of required course completion education |
| Education |
* HS diploma or G.E.D. * Current Clinical Student with course completion of Acute or Long-term Care Nursing Program, PCT, CNA, Fundamentals in Nursing, EMT, Military Medic, MA or one semester clinical education program rotation or equivalency * BLS (at time of hire) |
| Specialized Knowledge and Skills |
* Ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods of time. * Interpersonal skills for effective communication. * Excellent attendance * Assumes responsibility for ongoing education and completion of mandatory requirements. |
