Fleet Maintenance Crew Lead

Job Summary:

The Fleet Maintenance Crew Lead is responsible for coordinating the daily activities of the fleet maintenance team, ensuring timely and efficient service, repair, and upkeep of transportation assets such as trucks, trailers, and support vehicles. This role supports the department's operational goals by facilitating communication between technicians and management, assisting with training, and promoting safety and compliance. The Crew Lead works under direct supervision and relies on experience and judgment to meet performance standards.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

In addition to the responsibilities of a Fleet Maintenance Technician, the Crew Lead:

  • Coordinates maintenance schedules to minimize vehicle downtime and ensure fleet readiness.
  • Ensures shop areas, tools, and equipment are safe, clean, and organized.
  • Verifies that all technicians have received proper vehicle- and equipment-specific safety training.
  • Applies continuous improvement (CI) principles to enhance maintenance processes and reduce costs.
  • Leads daily toolbox talks and monthly safety meetings; provides hands-on training and mentorship.
  • Communicates effectively with drivers, dispatch, and management regarding vehicle status and repair timelines.
  • Supports safety initiatives and ensures compliance with DOT, OSHA, and company standards.
  • Assists in evaluating technician performance and providing feedback.
  • Maintains a parts program, overseeing purchase and accurate inventory of parts stock.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records, work orders, and service logs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support fleet operations.
Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED preferred.

1-3 years of experience in transportation or fleet maintenance; supervisory experience is a plus.

Working knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, pneumatic systems, mechanical systems, electrical diagnostics, and welding.

Familiarity with DOT regulations, vehicle inspection protocols, and safe shop practices.

Basic proficiency in maintenance software, Excel, Word, and Outlook. Ability to interpret service manuals, schematics, and technical bulletins. Must be at least 18 years of age.
