Organization 5344 is seeking a highly skilled, motivated and innovative Radar Systems Electrical Engineer to join our electronics team. Experience in advanced sensor engineering, RF communications, and Networked systems is essential as you will design and deliver advanced RF systems to support a broad range of ND, interagency, radar ISR, and related programs/initiatives. Your contributions will be vital to developing state-of-the-art embedded platforms. Having a desire to learn and develop your own skills will be crucial and beneficial as you join a fun and motivated team to accomplish missions vital to our nation. The ideal candidate will have a proven leadership background, particularly in managing technical teams, and will be adept at delivering high-integrity solutions in classified environments. Some travel will be required in this position.

On any given day, a Radar Systems Electrical Engineer will play a critical role in the design, development, and integration of advanced radar systems and subsystems. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure that customer Microwave and Sensor requirements are met, while also innovating and optimizing system-level architectures. Your expertise will contribute to national security initiatives and the advancement of cutting-edge technologies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • System-Level Architecture Design:
    • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and meet customer Radar Sensor requirements.
  • Radar Systems Development:
    • Analyze, design, develop, and integrate radar systems, subsystems, and modules.
    • Create specialized interfaces for both conventional and advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) applications using a diverse array of tools.
    • Innovate electrical systems to optimize power delivery for Digital Radio Frequency Memory (DRFM) microwave radars.
    • Produce custom mechanical, electrical, and cabling drawings.
    • Develop robust control and monitoring software using Python, C, and C++ to enhance radar system functionality.
    • Preferred experience in integration and Operational Test & Evaluation (OT&E) of radar systems, including:
    • Benchtop prototyping
    • Board-level and system integration
    • Environmental acceptance/qualification testing
    • Field Testing
  • Operational Planning:
    • Develop Concepts of Operation and test/qualification plans.
    • Create models for computational analysis of systems and processes.
    • Lead or support formal program reviews and negotiate technical requirements with customers.
    • Deliver hardware systems and data packages within established schedules and budget constraints, including:
    • FPGA/Firmware design and implementation
    • Embedded systems
    • Real-time data processing
    • Large-scale development systems and architectures
    • Algorithm development, implementation, and validation
    • Verification and validation of system requirements and technical documentation
    • Networked systems
  • Research and Development:
    • Shape, guide, or lead research activities to support program needs.
  • IT and Encryption Support:
    • Assist in network troubleshooting as required.
    • Preferred experience with Linux/Unix operating systems.
    • Familiarity with encryption processes and procedures is preferred.
  • Technical Interface:
    • Serve as a technical interface to other design and support organizations.

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$99,400 - $193,600

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance.
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Electrical Engineer candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Electrical Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Ability to work independently and collaborate well in a multidisciplinary team of designers and test engineers.
  • Outstanding verbal and written skills, including the ability to develop and present briefings that are clear and compelling.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Proven experience in radar systems development and integration.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, C, and C++.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Active DOE Q-level clearance.
About Our Team

The Radar ISR Analysis & Applications Department works within Sandias Radar Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance Business area to develop and field high-performance multi-mode radar systems. Our department specializes in deep engineering analysis of radar system design, modeling radar interactions with scenes and targets, analyzing radar performance in challenging real-world environments, project management, high-performance architectures and implementations, radar experimentation, and field- and flight-test. We apply our engineering skills to all phases of the system life cycle from fundamental research to use in the field with direct national security impact.
