Responsibilities
Job SummaryDrug Diversion Analyst is responsible for proactively identifying and investigating potential drug diversion within the acute care hospital environment. This position supports efforts to safeguard patients, staff, and the organization by analyzing medication use patterns, monitoring controlled substance transactions, and leading or supporting thorough investigations into suspected diversion incidents. The analyst collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to ensure a compliant and secure medication-use process aligned with regulatory requirements and hospital policy.
Essential FunctionsData Analysis & Surveillance:
- Analyze medication use and transaction data to identify trends, anomalies, and potential concerns related to drug diversion.
- Perform routine and ad hoc data reviews using EHR, ADM, and drug diversion analytics platforms to monitor compliance and suspicious activity.
- Escalate identified concerns for investigation in a timely manner.
- Develop and maintain automated tracking reports, dashboards, and surveillance tools.
- Support the maintenance of the Drug Diversion Dashboard for ongoing monitoring.
- Plan and execute targeted data queries to support diversion monitoring objectives.
- Create visualizations including graphs, spreadsheets, and dashboards to effectively communicate finding
Reporting & Communication:
- Prepare routine and ad hoc reports (daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly) on drug diversion metrics and findings.
- Develop and deliver presentations summarizing trends, audit results, and investigation outcomes.
- Present diversion-related data and insights to internal oversight committees and key stakeholders.
Auditing & Investigation Support:
- Conduct or assist with internal audits focused on controlled substance use and security. Participate in investigations by reviewing records, interviewing staff, and analyzing usage trends.
- Maintain strict confidentiality and professionalism throughout all investigative activities.
Compliance & Regulatory Monitoring:
- Monitor and interpret changes in relevant statutes, regulations, and compliance requirements related to controlled substances.
- Assist with the development and implementation of policies and procedures that support regulatory compliance
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
- Work closely with departments such as Pharmacy, Anesthesia, Medication Safety, Revenue Cycle, and Compliance to support a multidisciplinary diversion prevention strategy.
- Contribute to the creation and revision of organizational policies and procedures related to diversion monitoring and response
Education & Training:
- Support the development and delivery of training programs aimed at increasing staff awareness and prevention of drug diversion.
- Participate in ongoing staff education initiatives related to controlled substance handling and security.
Program Development & Oversight:
- Assist in the strategic development of the drug diversion surveillance program.
- Participate in diversion oversight committees and provide feedback to improve risk-based monitoring approaches.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in healthcare related field - Preferred
- Current Arizona Pharmacy Technician License (CPhT) - Preferred
Experience
- 2+ years of experience in an acute care hospital setting, ideally within pharmacy operations, compliance, quality, or risk management - Required
- Experience conducting data analysis, audits, or investigations related to controlled substances or medication use strongly preferred - Preferred
- Familiarity with controlled substance regulations and healthcare accreditation standards (e.g., DEA, Joint Commission, CMS) is desirable
Certifications and Licensure
- Completion of ASHP Drug Diversion Certificate - within six (6) months of hire required
