Description

GAI Consultants is looking for an Engineering Director 1 for Geotechnical Engineering in the Greater Pittsburgh Area. Your responsibilities in this position will include leading business development initiatives, managing geotechnical projects and staff within the Power Generation Group, and for clients serviced by GAI. The successful candidate will be eligible for a sign-on bonus and have a hybrid work schedule. This will be a part time position with about 20 hours a week.

Essential Duties:
The candidate should be driven and be seeking the opportunity to:



  • Function as a seller/doer
  • Identify, chase, and successfully win new business opportunities
  • Lead and manage projects primarily for Geotechnical Market
  • Technically lead engineering tasks in the area of expertise
  • Manage staff


Business Development Responsibilities:



  • Up to 35% of job duties will be dedicated to Business Development.
  • May serve as client contact for projects managed with support from PM Coach.
  • Actively wins new work from both new and existing clients by building and
    maintaining customer relationships, monitoring future work opportunities,
    communicating regularly, and attending client events.
  • Works closely with their PM Coach and/or more experienced PMs to coordinate
    and develop the proposed scope, schedule, and fee for the entire project.
  • Supports senior management in contract negotiations with clients.


Project Management Responsibilities:



  • Approximately 60% of job duties are dedicated to project management and
    technical delivery.
  • Delivers scope, schedule, budget, quality, safety, and profitability of all projects
    managed.
  • Plans and manages small to medium value projects, with a single or dual
    discipline focus and a low to medium risk profile.
  • Manages a small number of projects (typically 3 to 5) with up to $500k per year
    of total billings.
  • Under the direction of a PM Coach, works with Project Controls staff to analyze
    project performance data on an ongoing basis and develop recovery plans as
    needed. The candidate should have the desire and ability to travel to Project
    sites, as needed, primarily in the mid-west and mid-Atlantic regions of the
    United States.


Supervisory Responsibilities:



  • Up to 5% of job duties will be dedicated to supervisor responsibilities
  • Will be a direct supervisor for Geotechnical engineering staff.
  • Assembles and leads the project team and the scope, schedule, budget, quality,
    safety, and profit for the entire project.
  • A PM Coach will be assigned to provide close supervision and guidance
    throughout the life of their projects.
  • Direction Received: Works under the supervision of the Geotechnical Group
  • Leader and/or a PM Coach and typically reports to senior management
  • Travel to other offices/meeting with clients / attend project-specific meetings is
    necessary for this position (up to 10%).

Experience



  • 20+ years of experience.


Education



  • B.S. or M.S. Engineering, Master's Degree or Equivalent Experience Preferred


Certification/Licensure



  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License, reciprocity in multiple states.
  • Driver's License


Technical Responsibilities



  • Frequently performs advisory or consulting work for the practice across broad project areas or within a specialized area with innovative/complex aspects.
  • Assesses practices and requirements to achieve sustainable performance of complex engineering projects from a systems perspective.


Project and Task Management



  • Evaluates project management plans for complex engineering projects.
  • Develops risk mitigation plans to address project risks.
  • Evaluates effectiveness of leaders and teams.


Management, Supervision and Guidance



  • Leads an entire project of critical importance.
  • Develops projects needed for accomplishing the objectives of the practice.
  • Develops practice strategy for staff development through mentored experience, continuing education, and self-development.
  • Instills and fosters professional attitudes within the practice.


Communication, Teamwork and Leadership



  • Negotiates critical and controversial issues with leadership of other practices.
  • Represents their practice at important functions and conferences.
