Summary
Functions as the shift leader to organize and facilitate unit activities. Delivers and supports quality care adhering to regulatory requirements, professional standards, and evidence-based practice guidelines. Serves as a resource to staff and physicians, and collaborates with other disciplines and departments as needed to ensure smooth transitions and patient safety. The PCN also fulfills the duties of the Registered Nurse job description. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT: The RN works in a variety of patient care environments where there may be exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials such as chemotherapeutic agents, radioisotopes and radiation. Caring for patients also involves exposure to human waste and other unpleasant elements. Other duties may include general cleaning with exposure to dirt, odors, cramped quarters, etc. PCN's may work with angry, agitated, and combative patients. Physical Demands: Sensory Requirements: Hearing activity - conversation, monitoring equipment, telephone use, background noise. Sensory Discrimination - Hot/Cold, and Sharp/Dull. Assistive devices such as slide boards, pull sheets, Hoyer or over bed lifts, walkers, wheelchairs, and gait belts are available to assist with patient care activities. Taking Call is required (one weekend per 6-week work schedule) Does this position require Patient Care? Yes Essential Functions -Coordinates quality patient care in the Cardiovascular Center, Radiology, and Nuclear Cardiology -Promotes efficient utilization of resources -Provides clinical support and acts as a resource to nursing staff and unlicensed personnel in order to provide optimal patient care -Facilitates communication and collaboration within the CVC and outlying areas including: Radiology, Cardiology, hospital clinics/offices, and in-patient units -Assists with coordinating orientation for new staff -Manages daily CVC staffing requirements and assess frequently throughout the day making appropriate adjustments depending on case prioritization, patient flow -Delegates duties to unlicensed personnel to ensure continuity of patient care -Demonstrates critical thinking, creativity, and versatility in handling complex situations and problem solving -Communicates effectively with physicians to coordinate services -Uses principles of leadership to promote optimal health care for patients -Plans for staffing needs and makes patient care assignments based on patient needs and acuity, and staff competence -Identifies high risk patients and intervenes and communicates as needed -Assists in the planning of staffing needs for next shift/day -Acts as clinical and leadership resource by facilitating the delivery of patient care -*Acts as clinical resource by facilitating the delivery of patient care for a group of patients oPlans for staffing needs and makes patient care assignments based on patient needs and acuity, and staff competence oIdentifies high risk patients and intervenes and communicates as needed oAssists in the planning of staffing needs for next shift/day -Facilitates the flow of the unit or department and stays prepared for the unexpected -Communicates with Nursing Supervisors, bed control, referring and receiving units/departments and appropriate specialties regarding bed availability and assignments, as applicable -Assures compliance with established hospital and departmental policies/procedures, regulatory requirements, and patient safety, quality, risk management, environmental, and infection control standards -Ensures emergency equipment is checked and in working order -Supports staff and facilitates response to emergencies and disasters -Assists and communicates with other members of the nursing team and/or other disciplines effectively -Assumes direct patient care responsibility based upon the needs of the individual unit -Participates actively in problem solving and conflict resolution -Assesses ongoing educational needs of staff and makes recommendations to the Nurse Manager and Educator -Serves as a role model for professional growth and development through participation in educational programs; attendance of in-service meetings and workshops; and reviews of current literature -Participates in ongoing process improvement activities and provides leadership for the implementation of initiatives as recommended by the project teams -Supports and promotes management decisions, goals, and initiatives -Assists the Nurse Manager and Educator in assessing the quality of nursing care and documentation provided on the shift -Directs unit shift activities consistent with budgetary guidelines -*Oversees all nursing personnel assigned to the shift in accordance with the BORN regulations and professional standards of care oHolds staff accountable for the care of assigned patients oReports incidence of non-compliance to Nurse Manager or Nursing Supervisor in a timely manner oProvides feedback to Manager related to employee performance -*Makes independent decisions within the scope of the role -*Determines appropriate courses of action to take in complex situations that may not be addressed by existing policies, procedures, or protocols, including but not limited to matters such as changes in staffing levels, order in which work is done, and application of established procedures -*Demonstrates progressive leadership skills as evidenced by: oPlanning, organizing, and directing the activities of others oMotivating, leading, and coaching others effectively oFostering a safe working environment for peers and colleagues oMaking difficult decisions oShowing clear, unbiased judgment in resolving conflicts oCoaching others while maintaining constructive working relationships and professional communications oParticipating and contributing as a team member on committees oEncouraging others to share ideas and approaches to process improvement oPromoting Organizational Excellence programs and initiatives Education Other Certificate/Diploma Nursing required or Bachelor's Degree Nursing preferred Can this role accept experience in lieu of a degree?
