DESCRIPTION

The University of California San Diego is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Assistant Director, Athletic Communications. UC San Diego, located in La Jolla, in the San Diego Metropolitan area, enrolls over 35,000 students, earned recognition as one of the world's premier research universities, and is ranked as one of the top-10 public universities in the nation.

UC San Diego Athletics has a proud tradition of academic and athletic excellence, sponsors 24 varsity sports, and is a member of NCAA Division I in the Big West Conference.

The incumbent will work with the Assoc Athletic Director/ Communications to plan, develop and implement an ongoing communications program for the intercollegiate athletics department that will enhance UC San Diego's mission to be a premiere NCAA athletics program. Oversee and coordinate game management operations for a designated number of UC San Diego's 24 intercollegiate athletics programs. Outreach to the campus, community and media outlets in order to promote UC San Diego's intercollegiate athletics program. The incumbent will be an integral part of maintaining the athletic website and social media channels which showcases the athletic program and requires daily updates including schedules, contest results, statistics and stories. Responds to inquiries from public or media. Responses require some research and organization of material. Assists in gathering and preparing news and information. The incumbent will follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the UC San Diego Athletic Department and NCAA, and a commitment to diversity in all of its forms.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.

  • Professional knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of an NCAA Division I athletic program.

  • Working knowledge of concepts and principles of news, media communications and media relations. Proven successful track record of writing and developing promotional materials and activities for intercollegiate athletics through the writing of press releases, features and biographies, and understanding of the language and nuances of sports as they apply to writing. Knowledge and ability to run a professional press conference while maintaining a strong sense of ethical conduct.

  • General knowledge of the usage and applications of electronic communication tools and skill in using same. Demonstrated knowledge of graphic design, editing and layout of publications. Working knowledge of a variety of computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, Photoshop and various sport-specific statistics programs preferred). Working knowledge of email and Internet operations.

  • Working knowledge of the location, its achievements, mission, vision, goals, objectives, programs and infrastructure. Knowledge of the general purposes and objectives of a public information, public relations and sports information program.

  • Good written, verbal, interpersonal communication skills and political acumen. Excellent interpersonal skills, including demonstrated ability to appropriately exercise independent judgment, initiative, tact, diplomacy, flexibility and patience, and to successfully interact with diverse public, academic, staff and student populations on the telephone, via email and in person.

  • Good organizational skills. Ability to work independently, or with others, under pressure, to meet deadlines and to make editorial decisions.

  • Skill to maintain confidentiality.

  • Professional knowledge regarding the compilation, evaluation and distribution of sports results, statistics, etc. Thorough knowledge of sports statistics (utilizing programs such as Stat Crew and NCAA LiveStats) for a wide variety of sports, and proven ability to compile and compute statistical data in a timely manner.

  • Professional knowledge of how to manage the officials, scorers and/or press table at home athletic events. Experience in overseeing sports information and game management personnel.

  • Knowledge of intercollegiate sports and their specific playing rules, NCAA regulations and statistics. Working knowledge of the structure of athletic associations and their rules and regulations, especially the National College Athletic Association and the Big West Conference.

  • Working knowledge of various social media platforms and how they are used to engage constituents.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Work schedule will include evenings, weekends and holidays. Must be able to travel to out-of-town meetings and athletic competitions. Must be available for travel.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $65,800 - $115,000 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.51 - $55.08

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
