Position Summary:
Under direct supervision of registered optometrists, the Optical Shop Coordinator manages all optical shop activities for the Department of Optometry at Martha Eliot Health Center, which includes spectacle and contact lens ordering, dispensing, pricing, troubleshooting and also maintaining frame displays and inventory. The Optical Shop Coordinator will work with providers, interns, and support staff to provide exceptional customer service, advise patients on eyewear selection. Performs verification and understanding of insurances when appropriate and performs periodic front desk duties.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Interprets and fills optical prescriptions written by providers working in the department.
  • Manages eyewear and contact lens order cycle placing order, receiving product, dispensing product, while accurately maintaining status of every order.
  • Gives advice to patients on spectacle lens types, frames, and styling.
  • Manages MassHealth glasses orders, places prior authorization requests when necessary, and oversees verification of finished orders.
  • Supervises front desk staff in advising patients on eyewear pricing, completing paperwork as needed, and oversees customer care in the dispensary.
  • Performs eligibility and registration duties in the absence of front desk staff.
  • Takes frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning, consulting with optometrists when necessary.
  • Performs minor frame repairs for eyeglasses when needed and orders replacements when needed.
  • Selects, maintains inventory, sells, and orders a range of optical products including accessories.
  • Verifies lenses on delivery to ensure that they meet the required specifications.
  • Maintains and arranges shop displays.
  • Notifies patients on the status of their orders as appropriate in a timely manner.
  • Troubleshoots problems with orders/warranties/spectacle replacements.

Minimum Qualifications
Education:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's degree preferred.

Experience:
  • One (1) year of optical shop work experience required.

The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.
