Position Overview




Essential Job Duties
The Department of Crop and Soil Sciences encompasses diverse disciplines in research, extension, and teaching. The department's mission is to develop future leaders in crop, soil, and environmental sciences, improve crop plants and products, devise effective and sustainable crop production systems, devise effective and sustainable soil management techniques in both agriculture and urban settings; and disseminate crop, soil, and environmental science knowledge for the benefit of users and producers of food, feed turf, biofuels and fiber in North Carolina, the nation and the world.

We seek an exceptional postdoctoral associate to conduct NSF-funded independent research in the areas of nutrient biogeochemistry. The project will incubation of soils to replicate conditions involving soil salinization scenarios. The postdoc will provide analytical support, including X-ray fluorescence and spectroscopy approaches, and analytical chemistry approaches. Opportunities exist to interact closely with a group of distinguished intramural and extramural collaborators working on all aspects of phosphorus sustainability.
The position is under the direction and supervision of Dr. Owen Duckworth in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences. It is funded through the newly established NSF Science and Technologies for Phosphorus Sustainability ( STEPS) Center (https://steps-center.org/ ), headquartered at a new intersectional working space on NC State's Centennial Campus (https://cals.ncsu.edu/psi/psb). Interested applicants should be available to start as soon as possible. The position is supported through October 1, 2026, with the possibility of renewal with satisfactory performance.
Other Work/Responsibilities
In addition to laboratory studies, activities include: data collection at national laboratories and our facilities; supervising and mentoring graduate and undergraduate students; outreach to the community; data analysis; report, manuscript, and proposal preparation; and presentation of research at local, regional, and national meetings.

Requirements and Preferences






Work Schedule Monday - Friday, 8 am - 5 pm
Department Required Skills

  • General knowledge of soil and environmental science.
  • Ability to clearly and concisely present scientific data both orally and in writing.

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • The ideal candidate would have experience in studying soil chemistry, nutrient fate and transport, synchrotron-based X-ray techniques, analytical chemistry, and strong technical communication skills (written and oral).
  • A strong publication record is highly desirable.


Required License or Certification

  • A valid NC Driver's License and the ability to obtain an NC Driver's License within 60 days of hire.
  • A valid Driver's License must be maintained throughout employment.
