Title: Internship and Fellowship Outreach Coordinator

Location: Lansing, Michigan - 100% In-Person



Purpose: This position will report directly to the Laboratory Systems Section manager located at the State of Michigan's Public Health Laboratory. Under general supervision, this individual works with considerable independent judgment and organizational skills to fulfill Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) Fellowship and Internship program goals. This position requires the ability to assist in developing educational activities and informational resources to be used for recruitment and retention of laboratory interns and fellows to be placed across Michigan's public health laboratory system.

This staff member will travel to schools and regional public health laboratories across Michigan to conduct career events, work with other MDHHS agencies to support workforce development, and work within budget to support activities which increase the placement of interns and fellows in public laboratories. This is a limited-term position which requires significant travel but is based in-person at MDHHS Bureau of Laboratories in Lansing, Michigan.



Duties and Responsibilities:

Duty 1. Recruit and support a minimum of 10 fellows/interns within the next year: (45%)



  • Become familiar with Michigan public health laboratory system for potential as mentor sites
  • Serve as liaison between APHL and mentor laboratories by providing onboarding, employment support, and separation protocols for participants
  • Collaborate with APHL Fellowship and Internship programs to ensure participants complete their core curriculum
  • Develop a list of college and university science program contacts
  • Provide feedback to APHL regarding program benchmarks and barriers
  • Maintain pertinent records of program management


Duty 2. Participate in local and regional career events to promote APHL internships and fellowships: (20%)



  • Identify student groups, academic meetings, and career events
  • Work within budget to register for events and provide promotional materials
  • Assist interested students in navigating the application process
  • Attend the APHL Annual Meeting


Duty 3. Develop educational materials and resources to promote the programs:(10%)



  • Collaborate with APHL, BOL Outreach, and MDHHS Workforce Development teams to identify needed materials and ensure they follow pertinent ADA and acceptable use guidelines
  • Ensure opportunities for participants to communicate with internal and external partners regarding program projects


Duty 4. Collaborate with department health equity team to identify areas of opportunity and develop resources to promote the program in these areas:(5%)



  • Schedule meetings with MDHHS Workforce Development when needed to ensure the program meets departmental health equity


Duty 5. Introduce fellow/internship opportunities to colleges and universities:(5%)



  • Attend at least one Michigan Association of Laboratory Science Educators (MALSE) meeting to promote the program
  • Using contact list and networking resources, provide outreach (in-person and virtual) to university and community college science programs and student groups


Duty 6. Assist regional laboratories with developing internship opportunities: (5%)



  • Identify needs to fill gaps based on regional lab testing and staffing
  • Assist with onboarding and separation of fellows and interns


Duty 7. Coordinate fellowship and internship activities for collaboration and learning: (5%)



  • Provide opportunities for fellows and interns to practice presentation skills
  • Coordinate on-site lab tours and job shadowing experiences
  • Plan off-site lunches
  • Invite guest speakers to provide lunch-and-learn career presentations
  • Serve as mentor to assist with career ladder questions and trajectory when applicable


Duty 8. All other duties as assigned:



  • Always represent the best interests of MPHI and MDHHS



Qualifications/Requirements:

Education:Possession of a bachelor's degree in laboratory science, microbiology, molecular biology, cellular biology, or related field is preferred; bachelor's degree in education may be considered.



Experience:Minimum of two years of experience or equivalent in a laboratory, applied public health, or public health. Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, budgeting.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements:Must have ability to work at a computer and operate normal office equipment. Job involves keyboarding, driving, and exposure to clinical laboratories. Physical Activities: Standing, lifting, carrying, kneeling, bending, squatting, keyboard entry- daily. Conditions/Hazards: Presence of dust, odor, fumes, chemicals, biological agents, in a laboratory. Must have ability to work at a computer and operate normal office equipment. Must have a valid driver's license.
