Accountant for Great Lakes Harbor Light System & Detroit City Fund

Position Summary: This position directs and coordinates financial affairs according to the financial principles and government regulations for the Harbor Light System and the Detroit City Fund for The Salvation Army Great Lakes Division. This position plans new operation procedures to obtain optimum efficiency and reduced costs. They also direct receipts, disbursements, and expenditures of assets, approves and signs documents affecting monetary transactions, as well as directs the activities concerned with the safekeeping, control, and accounting activities. This position prepares budgets for Harbor Light System and Detroit City Fund Salvation Army locations as well as provides financial analysis and financial forecasts for these same units. They will analyze budget requests for appropriateness and direct the preparation of reports which outline financial position in areas of income, expenses, and earnings based on past and future operations. All reports must be prepared as required by regulatory agencies.

Essential Responsibilities:



  • Financial Services/Activities

    • Maintain a calendar of grant deadlines and ensure timely submission of applications and reports
    • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, including forecasting and variance analyses with explanations for review by Accounting Manager for Institutions & Grant Funded Programs
    • Develop and manage compelling grant proposals, budgets, and supporting documentation in collaboration with program and finance teams
    • Provide financial consultation to Harbor Light department directors and staff as required
    • Prepare and manage the preparation of and distribution of monthly and annual financial reports to department directors or other designated parties
    • Manage the monthly and year-end closing process, ensuring completion on a timely basis
    • Review reconciliations of various general ledger accounts that are prepared by the City Fund Accountant
    • Review and approve all journal entries prepared by accounting staff
    • Monitor all cash accounts for the Detroit City Fund and Harbor Light System and its related funds
    • Provide assistance with Territorial Headquarters' consolidation process


  • Planning/Administration

    • Ensure that the daily activities of all the funds under supervision operate efficiently
    • Monitor and oversee the grant compliance documentation of activities workflows and procedures for the Detroit City Fund and Harbor Light fund's accounting activities. This includes annual reviews of the same
    • Train and support staff on grant-related processes and compliance
    • Provide support to the Accounting Manager for Institutions & Grant Funded Programs as requested.
    • Assist in strategic planning for long-term funding sustainability


  • Supervision/Management

    • Monitor grant compliance, including spending, reporting, and deliverables
    • Provide overall management and oversight to Detroit City Fund and Harbor Light Fund accounting activities
    • Give direction to employees for the adherence to Salvation Army policies and procedures, timely and accurate reporting, enthusiasm for the goals and objectives of the Great Lakes Division and Finance Department, and a high level of commitment to The Salvation Army
    • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across departments

    • Assist with internal and external audits by preparing requested responses, reconciliations and work papers supported by adequate documentation
    • Assist with researching or resolving questions from vendors or department directors as requested.
    • Perform other duties as assigned





Qualifications:

Education/Experience:



  • Bachelor's degree in accounting
  • 4+ years' experience supervisory experience
  • 5+ years full-cycle accounting experience, including general ledger, financial analysis, and budgeting
  • An accounting or finance professional with a minimum of 4-6 years' experience, supervision or management of other staff. Experience in providing direction in developing accounting practices and staff for a multi-site organization preferred
  • Experience in non-profit organization preferred

Certificates and Licenses:



  • Complete Safe From Harm training, and keep current as needed
  • Must have and maintain a current valid driver's license and pass the Salvation Army Motor Vehicle Record check (MVR)
