SUMMARY:
The Senior Director, Enterprise CDI & Hospital and Professional Coding (Epic HB & PB) provides strategic and operational leadership for Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) and coding functions across all hospital and professional billing entities at Brown University Health. This executive role is responsible for optimizing Epic HB (hospital billing) and PB (professional billing) workflows, ensuring accurate, timely, and compliant coding and documentation practices, and driving enterprise-wide performance improvement. The Senior Director partners with clinical, HIM, compliance, and finance teams to support organizational financial goals, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead and oversee enterprise-wide CDI, hospital coding, and professional coding operations for all entities.
- Direct Epic HB and PB coding workflows, ensuring best practices, compliance, and optimization.
- Develop and implement strategies to improve coding accuracy, reduce denials, accelerate cash collections, and enhance overall revenue cycle performance.
- Oversee daily operations of CDI and coding teams, ensuring adherence to regulatory requirements, payer contracts, and internal policies.
- Collaborate with clinical, HIM, compliance, and finance teams to streamline workflows and ensure data integrity.
- Drive continuous process improvement initiatives using data analytics and key performance indicators (KPIs).
- Lead and mentor managers and staff, fostering a culture of accountability, professional growth, and high performance.
- Manage vendor relationships and coding technology platforms to optimize system utilization and automation.
- Prepare and present regular reports to executive leadership on coding and CDI performance, trends, risks, and financial outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and payer-specific coding and documentation regulations, including Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial insurers.
- Partner with legal and compliance departments to address audits, appeals, and regulatory inquiries effectively.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Business, Health Information Management, Finance, Healthcare Administration, or related field; Master's degree preferred. - 10+ years of progressive leadership experience in hospital and professional coding, CDI, and revenue cycle management, including offshoring and outsourcing of work/resources within healthcare.
- Proven track record managing large, complex coding and CDI operations with multiple service lines or specialties.
- Strong knowledge of CPT, ICD-10, HCPCS coding, credentialing, and payer billing requirements.
- Experience with Epic HB and PB billing systems (required), Cerner, Meditech, or similar platforms.
- Experience leading others in a large, highly complex and ever-changing organization.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving abilities and proficiency in data analysis tools.
- Ability to work collaboratively across departments and influence senior executives.
- Certification in healthcare finance, coding, CDI, or billing (e.g., CDIP, CCDS, RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CPB, CHFP) is a plus.
Working Conditions

- Requires occasional travel to other facilities, corporate offices, or industry conferences as needed.
Pay Range: $159,775.62-$263,625.54
