Job Summary
The Associate Director (AD) Primate Medicine is accountable for the strategic direction and administrative management of Primate Medicine Services, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Services, and the National Institute on Aging Colony. Duties include: 1) In collaboration with the Director, set the strategic direction for Primate Medicine, including Primate Medicine Services, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology Services, the Primate Assay Laboratory Core (co-led with the Infectious Diseases Unit), and the National Institute on Aging colony (co-led with AD Colony Management); 2) Leading a team of primate veterinarians, manage clinical care for a colony of approximately 5,000 nonhuman primates; 3) Support cutting-edge primate research for internal and external investigators including Core Scientists at this NIH-supported research facility; 4) Represent the California National Primate Research Center (CNPRC) to federal agencies and NIH consortia in collaboration with the AD Colony Management and other CNPRC key members; 5) In collaboration with the AD Colony Management provide oversight, planning, and management for the nonhuman primate colonies and animal care program; 6) In collaboration with the AD Colony Management, direct and manage animal program and regulatory compliance with campus, state, and federal regulatory agencies (e.g., AAALAC, USDA, FDA, CDC, NIH). Along with the AD Colony Management represent the CNPRC during regulatory inspections and inquiries. Department Overview The AD Primate Medicine directs a large and complex primate medicine program serving the CNPRC, UC Davis, other National Primate Research Centers, and investigators on a national level. Responsible for team building and professionalism within all areas of Primate Medicine; the AD Primate Medicine works closely with managers and supervisors to promote effective working relationships across Primate Medicine and all other CNPRC components including Core Scientists who serve as a part of the CNPRC infrastructure. The AD Primate Medicine will develop and implement operational policies and procedures covering medical, clinical, surgical and pathology services. This position will oversee regulatory requirements pertaining to veterinary medicine, veterinary anatomic pathology, and the clinical laboratory. The AD Primate Medicine must ensure a high level of animal care in veterinary medicine and surgery, anatomical pathology, and clinical laboratory support services, and balance research needs with UC Davis Animal Care Program requirements. The UC Davis CNPRC is an Organized Research Unit under the Office of Research and conducts interdisciplinary research on significant human health problems for which nonhuman primates are the animal of choice. In addition to major efforts in research, the CNPRC is also committed to UC Davis and NIH missions of teaching and service. - Board-certified by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. Successful completion of a residency program in Laboratory Animal Science. Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California and/or and eligible to obtain a licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of California within one year of employment.
- Doctoral Degree (D.V.M. or D.V.M./PhD)
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of laboratory animal medicine as evident by Diplomat Status in the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. USDA certified. Minimum of 7 to 9+ years of experience in laboratory animal medicine and minimum 5+ years of experience managing and directing complex animal preventative/emergency care programs and experience in all aspects of animal husbandry, production practices (breeding colony management) in animal care, and applied understanding of behavior management practices. Demonstrated professional veterinary experience in clinical medicine as it applies to diagnostics, surgical procedures, and medical treatment of nonhuman primates, and 5+ years of experience with progressive leadership in the management of a successful large-scale clinical veterinary service program. Demonstrated experience/expertise working with nonhuman primates as models of human disease. Experience in diagnosing and characterizing spontaneous diseases of nonhuman primates as potential models of human disease. Experience in nonhuman primate sales and breeding production, including marketing, pricing, budgeting, inventory control and management, cost and revenue projections, and regulatory requirements. Demonstrated experience in the field of laboratory animal care and clinically-based research support.
- Knowledge of institutional, local, state, national and international rules and regulations governing the use and care of laboratory animals (USDA Animal Welfare Act, ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, Endangered Species Act, FDA Good Laboratory Practice Regulations, and California Public Health Law). Knowledge of USDA regulations and AALAS practices and protocols pertaining to nonhuman primate models. Knowledge of U.S. regulations governing animal research and compliance activities. Managerial-level knowledge of humane care, use, and housing of animals with understanding of standards and guidelines as established by AAALAC with an emphasis on preventative medicine programs required for facility housed nonhuman primates, including vaccination, parasitology, bacteriology, and virology-screening programs in a large and complex animal research facility focused on research facilitation.
Preferred Qualifications
- AALAC CMAR certification (Certified Manager Animal Resources) and/or ILAM certification (Institute for Laboratory Animal Management).USDA accreditation to perform federally mandated duties associated with operation of a laboratory animal research facility.
- Demonstrated experience using strategic budget/accounting skills to produce a budget plan, rates, and forecast trends to conduct cost analyses of operations, and projected recharge and per diem costs in collaboration with administrative managers. Applied experience of regulatory guidelines and practices to author regulatory documents of high quality, appropriate decision making regarding operational management practices associated with clinical medicine, pathology, and clinical diagnostics. Demonstrated experience in research administration, and work requiring knowledge of regulatory compliance, personnel/payroll, accounting, project management, staff expectations and accountability, and/or resource planning; and demonstrated experience with daily oversight management responsibilities that include animal care/husbandry, quality assurance, safety and training, regulatory reporting/compliance, accountability, and financial management. Management experience to hire, train, develop, mentor, and effectively manage employees, including experience with performance management, and employee and labor relations in progressively more complex roles that include recruiting, supervising, coaching, and evaluating staff, and supervision and accountability of employees.
- Knowledge of infection control, biosafety practices, and bio-surveillance and training in biosafety levels 1-3. Familiarity with the different types of diagnostics available for infectious diseases. Knowledge of human and animal high containment biological facilities. Familiarity and previous use of analytic tools and exposure to new analytic methodologies used by professionals in the field of animal care management. Knowledge and understanding of organizational and interpersonal dynamics with the skill to perceive conflict and develop strategies to avoid and/or address. Skills to influence and maintain collaborative relationships with a range of individuals (e.g., Core Scientists, faculty, staff, students, and industry) while providing and ensuring quality veterinary care and programmatic and regulatory compliance. Proficiency with MS Office computer skills and other computer-based organization related programs.
