The Department of Emergency Medicine is searching for a full time Visiting Senior Research Specialist position to work with Project HEAL and the Center for Health Access as the Director of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI and be responsible for the research, design, development, and maintenance of advanced software systems that contribute to clinical research and quality improvement projects by leveraging statistical methods, machine learning algorithms, and data visualization techniques.

Requires a bachelor's degree in computer science or related field, 5 years of experience in software design & development employing Python, R, Tableau, MySQL, WordPress, Java, JavaScript, HTML, CSS, PHP, object-oriented programming, and data-driven design methodologies. Experience with internet technologies and artificial intelligence (AI) software development is also required. Familiarity with mobile technologies & development and administration of distributed systems is preferred.

Strongly prefer a candidate with a thorough knowledge of research data practices, methods, principles, and techniques used in patient-oriented clinical research, including experience with UIC information technology research infrastructures, e.g. REDCap, UIC Advanced Cyberinfrastructure for Education and Research (ACER), Azure SCE, UIC IRB and UI Health data regulations and policies.

This role will collaborate closely with principal investigators, clinicians and researchers to translate data insights into actionable strategies for better decision-making within the emergency department, particularly as it relates to social emergency medicine initiatives.

Must be capable of understanding, developing, communicating, and expressing ideas in nontechnical terms with research and clinician colleagues. Desire a candidate with excellent interpersonal, verbal and writing skills to work within a team of other researchers, developers, project sponsors, and operations staff.

Minimum Qualifications:

Current University of Illinois employee
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field of study
5 years of experience in database/software development and 3 years of experience in health-related research
Proficiency with applications such as REDCap (particularly use of APIs), Tableau, SQL, Python, and SPSS/SAS/or R.
Advanced knowledge of machine learning and AI systems and development

Preferred qualifications:

Master's degree in data science, machine learning and AI or a related field involving research methodology and statistical analysis.
Advanced knowledge of research principles, concepts, practices and methods.
Experience with REDCap advanced logic and data piping and experience working with the UIC Advanced Cyberinfrastructure for Education and Research (ACER) and cloud-based systems utilized by UIC, such as Azure SCE.
Training and in-depth knowledge of UIC IRB and UI Health data regulations and policies and familiarity with University of Illinois system machine learning and AI governance.
Prior data management experience in NIH/PCORI funded health studies preferred.
