The Data Science Services ( DSS) department helps students and other researchers develop critical data science and visualization skills through expert consultation, workshops, and classroom instruction. The department provides support for a wide range of data lifecycle activities including data collection, discovery, access, evaluation, cleaning, preprocessing, transformation, modeling, analysis, geospatial techniques, and visualization. The department is the service owner for the Dataspace in the Hunt Library and the Data Experience Lab ( DXL) in the Hill Library, community-oriented spaces offering specialized computing, expert assistance, and programs and services supporting data science and visualization. DSS collaborates with others in the Libraries and with NC State's Data Science and AI Academy ( DSA), a university-wide effort to meet the university's growing needs for data science research, education, and expertise.

Essential Job Duties
The Libraries is a central member of the data science community at NC State, and this position will play a critical role in supporting and growing that community. This University Library Specialist will provide technical, administrative, and communication assistance for all service areas associated with the department. They will work with the Department Head and Associate Head to support the operation of the Data Science Consulting Program, operated in partnership with the DSA, which employs graduate students with expertise in data science to offer consulting support to campus affiliates. This position will facilitate user referral and collaboration across Libraries and campus groups.
The position will report to the Department Head of Data Science Services. They will assist with management of the Data Science Consulting Program, help patrons with data-related questions, and assist with program and service management across the department. They will ensure that consultation requests are assigned to a Consultant or library staff member and help with data collection and evaluation related to the Consulting Program.
The position will provide support for the Dataspace and Data Experience Lab ( DXL) and help coordinate facilities, technology, outreach, and events. They will assist with the management of the hardware and software associated with the spaces and coordinate with Libraries IT as needed. They will create content for and maintain communication channels related to Data Science Services, including eboards, web pages, signage, and newsletters. Additionally, the position will collaborate with department members and assist with workshops and events in Libraries spaces, including developing each semester's workshop calendar and managing workshop registration systems.
This position is based in North Carolina. This position is eligible for flexible hours and a hybrid work environment, based on departmental and operational needs. This position will require a majority of onsite work.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education

Bachelor's degree and one year of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or High School diploma or equivalency and five years of experience in a library or in archives or records management; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably, including the ability to convey complex ideas and to exercise independent judgment.
  • Attention to detail, time-management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, including the ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships.
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service and to foster an environment of belonging and well-being.
  • Ability to work with the Google suite of applications, including Drive, Calendar, Gmail, etc. and interest in learning to work with other applications.
