About the Department
About the Cluster:
The Biopharmaceutical Manufacturing faculty cluster will lead trans-disciplinary research and educational efforts related to the discovery, process development and manufacturing of next-generation biologics, including protein therapeutics, gene and cell therapies, nucleic acid-based products and vaccines. The cluster objectives are: to enhance the university's participation in large research efforts funded by federal agencies, nonprofits, industry and other academic institutions in the U.S. and worldwide; to develop new academic programs to educate and train undergraduate and graduate students in North Carolina and around the world on state-of-the art biopharmaceutical manufacturing technologies; and to identify opportunities for applications of these new technologies to other areas of biomanufacturing.
North Carolina State University (NC State) has a strong foundation in this area, with numerous faculty members conducting research related to biopharmaceutical manufacturing across multiple departments. Furthermore, the university is home to the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center ( BTEC), a unique center that offers research, process development and educational programs for both university students and industry professionals and is housed in a facility featuring both bench- and pilot-scale labs for biopharmaceutical production. New faculty appointed to the cluster are expected to synergize with this broad network of existing faculty and staff members to significantly amplify NC State's leadership and activity in this critical field.
