Departmental Overview

The Social Science Career Readiness Internship Program (SSCRIP) is a division-wide program for undergraduate social sciences majors who are interested in a summer internship to gain experience as they prepare to join the workforce.

With a focus on low-income, underserved, and first-generation students, SSCRIP participants are guaranteed funding for a paid internship (domestic or international) upon completion of the required career readiness course.

The Division of Social Sciences within the College of Letters & Science is the largest academic division on campus, with an annual budget of approximately

$170M, 277 permanent faculty FTE, and undergraduate enrollment which averages 30,000 per semester. It is also among Berkeley's most heterogeneous divisions, with faculty studying every dimension of the human experience. Its academic departments include African American studies, anthropology, demography, economics, ethnic studies, geography, gender and women's studies, history, linguistics, political science, psychology and sociology. The Division is also home to the Interdisciplinary Social Sciences Programs which include Political Economy, Global Studies, Cognitive Science, and the Master of Computational Social Science programs, the Social Science Matrix, D-Lab, and several related research units. Position Summary

The Director of SSCRIP provides collaborative leadership and strategic vision to develop and grow an important initiative within the Social Sciences Division. Working alongside the Dean's Office, this is an outward-facing position that manages all operational and administrative functions, including outreach, admissions, and the cultivation of key partnerships with alumni donors and internship providers. Additionally, the Director manages the complex summer internship placement and financial award processes, provides high-level advising to students facing challenges, and creates opportunities to build community amongst the cohorts. Finally, the Director ensures continuous improvement by regularly measuring program effectiveness, growing the external partner network, and implementing necessary adjustments to provide long-term stability for the program's funding and placement goals.

Responsibilities

Program Operations:

  • Develops and leads the long-term strategic vision and growth of the program. Establishes priorities, approves goals and action plans, and drives policy development, including the leveraging of technology for expansion.
  • Advises the SSCRIP Career Readiness Course instructor on each cohort's specific interests and needs to ensure the curriculum effectively helps students identify their skills, develop career goals, and prepare for internship and job searches.
  • Collaborates with the Development team to manage and allocate donations, as well as prepare reports and informational materials for donors.
  • Partners with the Dean's office to create an annual calendar of events that builds community, sustains a supportive cohort environment, and offers opportunities for ongoing professional development.
  • Designs and analyzes program evaluations, using the resulting data to measure success and inform strategic improvements.
  • Manages SSCRIP administrative and operational tasks.
  • Provides fiscal oversight for the program budget, ensuring all expenditures are tracked and comply with university policy.
  • Works with the Dean's office to ensure all program materials and digital resources, including the website, remain current.
  • Reviews the 12Twenty platform annually to improve the internship application process and student outcome reporting. Ensures the system collects necessary data to analyze process effectiveness and coordinates with the Dean's office to implement platform updates.
  • Directs the resolution of highly complex student issues and grievances related to the course, programming, or internships, involving Divisional leadership when necessary.

Internship Placement:

  • Develops and refines the strategy for internship application, placement, and agreement processes.
  • Resolves internship placement issues and adjusts strategies as needed to accommodate program growth and improve outcomes.
  • Works closely with the Development team on alumni outreach and actively recruits alumni to serve as internship providers, dedicated mentors, host workshops, and participate in networking opportunities.
  • Partners with the Public Service Center, Cal in Sacramento, and other campus units to identify and secure internship opportunities.
  • Establishes a vetting and selection process for international internship partners, and conducts post-program debriefs to determine future partnership opportunities.
  • Provides high-level guidance to students having difficulty securing an internship and connects them with appropriate resources.

External Relations:

  • Partners with the Development team to represent the program and its strategic priorities during donor conversations. Identifies engaged alumni and connects them with the Development team.
  • Delivers presentations to internal and external stakeholders to increase awareness of SSCRIP, facilitate internship opportunities, and foster collaborative partnerships.
  • Develops community outreach and business development strategies focused on engaging local businesses, nonprofits, and community and arts organizations to cultivate relationships that generate internship opportunities.

  • Convenes annual end-of-year debriefs with key stakeholders to review program outcomes.

Recruitment & Admission:

  • Develops and leads the annual outreach and recruitment strategy to scale the program. Partners with the communications team to create effective marketing materials and social media campaigns.
  • Leads the SSCRIP application and admissions process, defines and updates the selection criteria, chairs the admission committee meetings, and approves the final cohort.

Required Qualifications

  • Advanced knowledge of career development theories, adult development theory, counseling processes, career coaching techniques, career decision making, learning styles, and job search techniques.
  • Advanced knowledge of needs assessment theory, processes, and practice; workshop and program design.
  • Advanced knowledge of UC programs, career services, employer, alumni, and faculty needs and expectations, recruiting and staffing methods, employment trends.
  • Strong ability to design and modify computer applications to meet program needs, problem identification, presentation skills, verbal communication, written communication, and organization skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaborate with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Prior experience within the University of California system or at comparable institutions.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $100,000.00 - $120,000.00.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
