Purpose of the Job The Senior Staff Accountant position is responsible for performing a number of different complex accounting tasks. Their duties include assisting other accounting staff in daily tasks and reviewing financial data to assist in making financial decisions. Essential Functions and Responsibilities
- Prepares and reviews complex journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Supports monthly, quarterly, and year-end close processes.
- Collaborates with other departments and/or external service providers to ensure all transactions have been properly recorded.
- Analyzes account balances and investigates variances.
- Prepares accruals, journal entries, and drives completion of the month-end close process.
- Reviews entries in the general ledger and subsidiary ledgers for accuracy; research discrepancies and make corrections.
- Assists in preparing internal financial reports and schedules for leadership and auditors.
- Maintains fixed asset schedules, leases, accruals, and prepaid accounts.
- Ensures compliance with internal accounting policies and U.S. GAAP.
- Performs research on technical accounting matters and performs other ad hoc analysis as needed.
- Identifies and implements process improvements to increase accuracy and efficiency.
- Develops and documents significant processes for both operational and financial reporting.
- Contributes to accounting systems upgrades and automation initiatives.
- Seeks development opportunities for self as well as assisting in the development of others.
- Engages in assisting Accounting Leadership as needed, including participation in all project meetings and considering the impact on the overall Accounting team.
- Supports internal and external audit processes by preparing requested documentation.
- Helps maintain documentation for key controls and accounting procedures.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
- Serves as back-up for Accountants as needed.
- Assists with other tasks and projects as assigned.
- Maintains a commitment to continued learning.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have extensive comprehension of GAAP and financial institution industry accounting principles to ensure compliance with financial reporting.
- Must have superior mathematical and analytical skills to be able to perform, interpret, and analyze financial information.
- Must have the ability to use different types of accounting and/or software, including reconciliation software.
- Must demonstrate advanced proficiency in MS Excel and advanced knowledge in MS Office.
- Must have the ability to analyze and understand all business processes within the CU, and make recommendations for improvements.
- Must have advanced knowledge of reconciliation methods.
- Must be results-oriented and demonstrate initiative.
- Must demonstrate ability to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions.
- Must promote healthy working relationships by maintaining a positive attitude and communicating in a collaborative, professional manner.
- Actively participates in committees and project teams to assist with developing and executing strategic initiatives
- Must have the ability to handle financial transactions related to the insurance operations, including commission reconciliations and premium processing.
- Must be able to complete all assignments with minimal supervision and have excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Must be able to work in a general office environment or a remote environment.
- Should possess a strong commitment to providing excellent service to Truliant's members.
Physical Requirements
- Occasional standing, walking, bending, and stooping required.
- Must be able to sit at a desk for long periods of time and use a computer.
- Must be able to moderately lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 20 pounds.
Education and Background
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting or related field required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired.
- Minimum of 5 years' experience in accounting required, preferably in financial services.
- Knowledge of financial industry accounting preferred.
- CPA or MBA Preferred.
