Overview
Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care ( UBHC), established in 1971, offers a full continuum of evidence based behavioral health and addiction services for children, adolescents, adults, and seniors throughout New Jersey. UBHC's 1,060 experienced behavioral health professionals and support staff are dedicated to treatment, prevention, and education. UBHC, one of the largest providers of behavioral health care in the country, has a budget of $260 million and has 15 sites throughout New Jersey. Services are readily accessible and include: inpatient, outpatient, partial hospitalization, screening, crisis stabilization, family/caregiver support, community outreach and case management, supportive housing, supported employment, prevention and consultation, employee assistance programs, and a licensed therapeutic school from preschool through high school. Specialty services include the New Jersey suicide prevention helpline and peer help lines for police, veterans, active military, teachers, mothers of special needs children and child protective service workers. In FY2016, UBHC treated 16,199 consumers, had 24,502 admissions, and touched the lives of 19,441 individual callers through peer support. In addition, UBHC is the primary mental health training resource for the New Jersey departments of Human Services, Children and Families, and Corrections, delivering 16,000 trainings each year.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a per diem Phlebotomist I for the Acute Services Department within Rutgers University Behavioral Health Care.

The primary purpose of the Phlebotomist I is to collect blood specimens from patients and prepare all samples for processing by the laboratory. Responsible for performing electrocardiograms (EKGs) on a limited, as needed basis.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Performs phlebotomy (venipuncture and finger stick) according to established procedure with minimal discomfort to patient.
  • Collects urine specimens from patients.
  • Utilizes computers as appropriate in completing assigned functions.
  • Organizes daily assignments and manages workload to ensure timely specimen collection and processing.
  • Assists colleagues and communicates effectively with laboratory and clinical staff to ensure efficient workflow.
  • Performs electrocardiograms (EKG) on a limited, as needed basis.
  • Prepares, processes and packages specimens for transport to reference laboratories following chain of custody and specimen integrity standards.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Completion of an approved training program for Phlebotomy, which includes EKG training as required by the New Jersey Department of Education and Work Force Development.
  • One (1) year of experience as a phlebotomist, involving the drawing of intravenous and capillary blood

Certifications/Licenses
  • Valid driver's license.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Must be PC literate with proficiency in data entry and word processing.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Phlebotomist and/or Medical Assistant certification.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Light physical effort (up to 10 pounds). Occasional to frequent prolonged standing/walking. Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. Occasional driving from site to site.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: May be exposed to infections and contagious diseases. Possibility of cuts, bruises and strains. Subject to varying and unpredictable situations. Occasionally exposed to patients exhibiting assaultive behaviors. Generally pleasant working conditions in a clean, well lighted, quiet to moderately loud setting.
