Position Summary
The HR Coordinator for Pathology Laboratories is responsible for various Human Resources operations of the UIH Pathology Laboratories. The HR Coordinator works collaboratively with department leadership, campus administration and UI Hospital administration and is expected to function with a high level of confidentiality and independent decision-making. The HR Coordinator assists in department recruitment, reviewing policies, conducting investigations, preparing reports, and various aspects of attendance and benefit usage. Assists with maintaining department compliance records.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Partners with the leadership team to understand and execute the organizations human resource and talent strategy particularly as it relates to current and future talent needs, recruiting, retention, and succession planning.
  • Provides support and guidance to Sr. Business Manager, Associate Chief Clinical Operations Officer, and other staff when complex, specialized, and sensitive questions and issues arise; may be required to administer and execute routine tasks in delicate circumstances such as investigating allegations of wrongdoing and documenting discipline.
  • Assists with the talent acquisition process, which may include recruitment, coordinating interviews, and hiring of qualified job applicants, particularly for managerial, exempt, and professional roles; collaborates with departmental managers to understand skills and competencies required for openings. Works with Recruitment team for application status and updates.
  • Assist with timesheet review, shift differentials, and scheduling changes.
  • Assess training needs in department. Assists with presentations and trainings that provide internal development opportunities for employees.
  • Maintains compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommended best practices; reviews policies and practices to maintain compliance. Maintains compliance with relevant collective bargaining agreements.
  • Maintains relevant knowledge of university systems, best practices, regulatory changes, and university policies.
  • Answer employee questions related to benefits, HR policies, and lab-specific procedures.
  • Assist with employee relations issues by documenting concerns and coordinating investigations.
  • Serves as liaison to Hospital Administration and UIC Human Resources regarding staff appointments, recruitment of staff, and employment transactions through university systems.
  • Help maintain compliance records for audits by CAP, CLIA, OSHA, and state regulators.
  • Update HRIS systems with employee changes, job codes, and department transfers.
  • Generate HR reports related to staffing levels, turnover, credentials, and training compliance.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications

    1. Bachelor's degree in Human Resource Administration, Management, Organizational Administration, Public Administration, Labor Relations, Business Administration or a field closely related to the position.
    2. Two (2) years (24 months) of work experience performing professional-level human resources duties.
    3. Additional education, training, and/or work experience in the area of specialization inherent to the position, may be required.


    Preferred Qualifications
    Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications (Excel, Outlook, etc).

    Have a strong administrative and organizational background and on-the-job experience in administration with demonstrated competence.

    Have complete understanding and comprehension of office administration practices, methods and protocol.

    Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely, in both oral and written form.

    Knowledge of management principle, practices, methods, and techniques.

    Must exhibit professional attitude when working with internal as well as external clients.

    Preferred candidate would have a working knowledge University of Illinois Hospital and University policies and procedures.

    Preferred candidate would have a thorough understanding of laboratory staffing needs in order to set priorities on position utilization.
