Essential Job Duties
Join Building Maintenance and Operations and be part of a team that keeps our facilities running efficiently and supports the success of the campus community every day. The Facilities Maintenance Technician - Electrician plays a critical role in supporting safe, reliable, and efficient building operations. This position is responsible for maintaining, repairing, and operating key facility systems, including electrical, HVAC, plumbing, and boiler equipment, within an assigned maintenance service zone.

Working as part of a skilled and collaborative team, this technician helps ensure campus buildings remain comfortable, functional, and ready to support daily operations. This role is ideal for a hands-on professional who enjoys problem-solving, values safety and quality work, and takes pride in keeping complex systems running smoothly.

Key responsibilities and duties include but are not limited to:


  • Install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems, including temperature controls, regulators, and sensors.
  • Install, troubleshoot, and service secondary electrical systems and components such as conduit, wiring, panels, breakers, motors, switches, and receptacles.
  • Maintain refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment in accordance with manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
  • Diagnose and resolve issues with boilers, pumps, condensate receivers, steam and hot water lines, air compressors, and auxiliary equipment.

  • Install, repair, and maintain piping, fixtures, and related plumbing systems.
  • Identify and correct defects or malfunctions in electrical control circuits and HVAC systems.
  • Develop practical solutions for both standard and non-standard repairs across electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems.
  • Follow safety procedures and applicable codes, ensuring all work is compliant, high quality, and inspection-ready when required.
  • Support reliable facility operations by responding to maintenance needs and minimizing service disruptions.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and the general public, and follow verbal and written instructions related to work assignments and operational needs.

  • Perform physically demanding work, including standing for extended periods, working in confined spaces, climbing ladders, and accessing elevated or below-grade areas such as roofs, above-ceiling spaces, and utility pits.
  • Lift and transport materials weighing up to 50 pounds (with or without reasonable accommodations) and work safely in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, weather conditions, and terrain.

Qualifications




Minimum Experience/Education
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification(s).

Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in mechanical or building trades in a university setting.
  • Working knowledge of electrical systems and controls, including experience installing, troubleshooting, and repairing conduit, wiring, electrical panels, breakers, motors, switches, and related components in commercial or institutional facilities.
  • Demonstrated experience with HVAC and mechanical systems, such as temperature controls, refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, boilers, pumps, steam or hot water systems, and the ability to diagnose system issues and perform effective repairs.
  • Strong problem-solving and safety awareness skills, with the ability to interpret technical documentation, follow codes and regulations, work independently or as part of a team, and communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers to support reliable facility operations.

Required License or Certification

  • Valid DL required.
  • Valid North Carolina driver's license is required within 60 days of hire and must be maintained.
