Job Description

Dr. Marcelo Barbosa (Barbosa Lab) is seeking an outstanding candidate for a Research Specialist I position based at the Fisher Delta Research, Extension, and Education Center (FD-REEC) at the University of Missouri in Portageville, MO (https://moaes.missouri.edu/t-e-jake-fisher-delta-research-extension-and-education-center/).

The successful candidate will collect field samples and data using drones and handheld sensors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Remote sensing data processing: Processes data collected with drones and handheld sensors.
    • Responsibilities include generating orthomosaics and extracting spectral information (e.g., spectra bands and vegetation indices). This work is time-intensive due to large data volumes and file sizes and is essential for quality control before any further analysis.
  • Data Organization and integration: Organizes and combines image-based datasets with corresponding filed data in spreadsheets or databases to support further analysis and data management.
    • Responsibilities include file organization, dataset documentation, and preparation of clean, analysis-ready data products.
  • Remote sensing data collection: Conducts field-based remote sensing data collection using drones and handheld sensors over agricultural research plots. Data collection will be on crops including cotton, soybean, corn, and rice.
  • Web-based data preparation: Downloads, organizes, and prepares web-based datasets, such as satellite imagery, as required for research support. Ensures datasets are properly formatted and documented for integration with project data.
  • Field trial set-up and data collection: Support with the implementation and maintenance of field trials. Collects soil and plant samples in field environments based on research protocols. Plant sampling includes both productive plant parts and foliage to support agronomic and physiological analyses. Ensures accurate labeling, handling, and documentation of samples.
  • Supports undergraduate and graduate students in research activities.
    • Responsibilities include assisting with data collection, data processing workflows, proper use of equipment, and adherence to research protocols.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Shift

Full-time, 40-hour workweek, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience and at least 1 year of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

The preferred candidate will have:

Master's degree in Agricultural Engineering, Precision Agriculture, Computer Science, or a related field;

Experience with photogrammetric image processing software (Agisoft Metashape, Pix4D, or other);

Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software (QGIS, ArcGIS, or other);

Proficiency in at least one programming language (R, Python, or other);

Demonstrated scientific writing skills;

FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate

Anticipated Hiring Range

The anticipated hiring range for this position has been established as $17.05 - $21.64 /hour.

Salary is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to, the individual's particular combination of education, skills, and experience, as well as organizational requirements.
