This summer internship is designed for medical students who are interested in understanding the financial, operational, and leadership drivers of clinical practice, with a specific focus on Value-Based Care (VBC) models. The intern will gain exposure to how healthcare organizations balance quality, cost, access, and outcomes, and how clinicians can lead successfully in value-based environments. This is a non-patient-facing role focused on education, analysis, and leadership development.

8 week Summer Internship with an emphasis in Population Health, Healthcare Finance, Value Based Care

You'll enjoy the flexibility to work remotely * from anywhere within the U.S. as you take on some tough challenges. For all hires in the Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. area, you will be required to work in the office a minimum of four days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Learn the fundamentals of healthcare finance, including how practices generate revenue, manage costs, and operate under value-based reimbursement models
  • Support projects related to value-based care strategy, population health, quality metrics, and practice performance
  • Analyze clinical and operational workflows to understand how financial decisions impact patient outcomes and provider experience
  • Partner with physician leaders, administrators, and cross-functional teams to observe clinical leadership in action
  • Participate in educational sessions, readings, and discussions focused on managed care, population health, and VBC principles
  • Assist with data review, presentations, and summary materials for leadership discussions
  • Complete a capstone project synthesizing learning related to value-based care, practice operations, or healthcare finance

Learning Objectives

  • Understand how value-based care models differ from fee-for-service
  • Gain foundational knowledge of practice finances, incentives, and performance metrics
  • Develop skills to lead and influence care delivery in value-based clinical environments
  • Build exposure to clinical leadership roles beyond direct patient care

Required Qualifications:

  • Current enrollment in an MD or DO program at an accredited medical school
  • Proven interest in healthcare leadership, practice management, population health, or value-based care
  • Proven solid analytical, communication, and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a professional environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Medical students in their 3rd or 4th year
  • Interest in or pursuit of additional training in MPH, MBA, Health Policy, or Population Health
  • Curiosity about healthcare systems, reimbursement, and clinical operations

Program Details

  • Duration: Summer internship (approximately 8-10 weeks)
  • Schedule: Full-time
  • Location: Remote with occasional onsite exposure (based on business need)
  • Patient Care: None - this role is not patient-facing

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. In addition to your salary, we offer benefits such as, a comprehensive benefits package, incentive and recognition programs, equity stock purchase and 401k contribution (all benefits are subject to eligibility requirements). The hourly pay for this role will range from $16.00 to $21.00 per hour based on full-time employment. We comply with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
