Radiation Oncology - Berkeley Outpatient Center

Job Summary


Under the supervision of the Administrative Nurse (AN) or Charge Nurse, the Clinical Nurse II (CNII) is responsible for providing skilled and comprehensive nursing care to radiation oncology patients with a wide variety of oncological and/or disease related problems seen for consultation, treatment, and follow-up. Through application of the nursing process, the CNII provides direct care and implements plans for continuity and coordination of patient care with other members of the patient's health care team.

In collaboration with the AN, the CNII provides appropriate guidance and supervision for ancillary nursing personnel and participates in orientation of new medical and/or technical personnel. Responsibilities include compliance with Medical Center and departmental Policies and Procedures, Environmental Safety, House and Telephone Standards, compliance with all regulatory agency requirements.

The position may involve travel between and occasional working at all UCSF Radiation Oncology sites. The hours are generally daytime from about 7AM to 5PM, but may vary with start times from 6:00 AM to 11:00 AM and end times may vary from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM.

This role will function as the primary contact for the patients of a specific MD(s) to manage side effects, symptoms, care and coordination of complex interdisciplinary services. The CNII will work closely with one or more physicians who will be directing and delegating care as appropriate. This role will be at our Berkeley location, a satellite location. The RN(s) at this site is/are expected to problem solve and function more autonomously with a multidisciplinary group of staff by communicating effectively to coordinate care, arrange lunches/breaks, and manage clinic flow.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $93.47 - $121.11 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center in an accredited National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center. The NCI-Designation recognizes the scientific leadership, resources, and the depth and breadth of the research in basic, clinical and population science. As a Comprehensive Cancer Center, we demonstrate the added depth and breadth of research as well as substantial transdisciplinary research that bridges these scientific areas. The Department of Radiation Oncology encompasses three sites and provides comprehensive radiation treatment using the best in class modalities. Our interdisciplinary team of nurses, therapists, dosimetrists, physics and physician treat 250 patients daily at three hospital sites.

Required Qualifications


  • Minimum of 2 year's oncology experience as a Registered Nurse (RN) employed in acute care setting.
  • At least 1-2 year's RN experience in relevant clinic or other outpatient/ambulatory setting.
  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Experience with starting IV's.
  • Ability to function independently in making decisions and problem solving within scope of licensure and good clinical judgement.
  • Ability to interact on an interpersonal level with patients and staff. Ability to deal with issues related to death and dying.
  • Basic computer skills including, use of email, internet, navigating windows, and ability to learn various computer systems such as Epic, Aria and other clinical tools.
  • Adheres to all regulatory, and UCSF policies and procedures.
  • This position requires flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center Radiation Oncology locations.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Both inpatient and outpatient/ambulatory oncology experience
  • Experience in ambulatory setting with Epic's "InBasket," triaging, care navigation/coordination
  • Accessing ports
  • Radiation Oncology experience

License/Certification


  • Active Registered Nurse licensure in the State of California
  • Active American Heart Association CPR Certification
