Overview

The Project Specialist serves to develop and implement Industrial Hygiene initiatives on a company-wide basis, while also providing support and counsel as a subject matter expert in assigned safety and health-related subject matter areas. These initiatives include designing and performing exposure assessments, performing industrial hygiene activities to evaluate possible workplace hazards, advising operating groups on appropriate actions to protect their employees, as well as providing support and counsel in assigned safety and health-related subject matter areas. This individual applies strong leadership, interpersonal, and technical skills along with excellent written and verbal communication abilities to achieve required results. This individual will also use their skills to contribute to a positive, team-spirited safe work culture.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Interact with both internal customers and external stakeholders on a proactive basis.
  • Stay abreast of pending regulatory, company programs, and operating process changes related to Industrial Hygiene and any other assigned subject matter areas.
  • Proactively identify and evaluate potential impacts, recommend potential responses and, if necessary, remedial actions.
  • Serve as the company's subject matter expert (SME) in areas including but not limited to: EH&S qualifications for supplier procurement and oversight, environmental sampling, occupational and environmental noise (including hearing conservation), respiratory protection, and ergonomics.
  • Perform analysis of exposure assessment results and develop/implement corrective actions as required to maintain compliance with applicable regulations, guidelines, and standards.
  • Identify, plan, develop, and implement improvements to safety and industrial hygiene related process flow including sampling strategies, scheduling and conducting surveys for chemical, physical, and biological agents.
  • Manage purchase agreements and invoicing and oversee contractors in accordance with company requirements.
  • Coordinate and participate in the performance of job safety analyses, exposure hazard assessments as assigned to ensure identification of all potential safety and health liabilities, as well as the adoption of appropriate controls.
  • Prepare reports and supporting materials to communicate incident analyses, compliance trends, performance information, regulatory issues, and other subject matter area-specific discussion documents as assigned.
  • Prepare and present topic-appropriate materials to communicate safety and health-related information and requirements to both field and management personnel.
  • Direct and/or provide immediate response to incidents on a 24x7 basis in accordance with duty schedule and initiate/support event-related analyses.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Industrial Hygiene/Safety, Science or a technical discipline and 4 years relevant work experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • 2 years Experience in health and safety program development/management, operations leadership, and/or other technical discipline, required.
  • Functional expertise in the underlying regulatory bases and technical principles of Industrial Hygiene/safety-related procedures and instructions, required.
  • Understanding of root cause analysis techniques and data analysis principles, required.
  • Operational familiarity with the practices and requirements of service commodities, required.
  • Prior experience managing Industrial Hygiene/safety-related subject matter areas, or working knowledge of associated Federal, State, and local requirements, preferred.
  • Familiarity with OSHA and other workplace safety-related requirements, preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint, etc.
  • Ability to influence internal and/or external constituents
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
  • Other: Certified Industrial Hygienist and/or
  • Certified Safety Professional Preferred
Physical Demands
  • Ability to carry tools and materials when climbing ladders and scaffolds, and entering confined spaces
  • Ability to work on elevated platforms, scaffolds, catwalks, roofs, and/or other equipment
  • Ability to be approved to wear and use either a full or half-face respirator, without facial hair or other conditions that may interfere with the seal, in accordance with OSHA regulations
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able and willing to travel within Company service territory, as needed.
  • Must be able to work in varying field conditions including weather extremes and in work areas such as excavations, subsurface distribution structures, and at high elevations.
