KPMG is currently seeking a Quantum Researcher, Director to join our Enterprise Solutions organization.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead advanced research initiatives on quantum algorithms, error correction, and hybrid quantum-classical systems, setting technical direction for near-term applications in optimization, simulation, and machine learning; direct the development and benchmarking of quantum solutions using gate-based platforms (IBM Quantum, IonQ, Azure Quantum) and quantum annealing systems (D-Wave) as appropriate to client requirements
  • Oversee the design and implementation of quantum machine learning (QML) and quantum neural network (QNN) approaches for classification, regression, and generative modeling use cases; lead client engagements to formulate business problems using quantum optimization techniques including variational algorithms, adiabatic methods, and hybrid classical-quantum architectures
  • Evaluate quantum hardware and software vendors to support client technology selection and roadmap decisions; maintain relationships with key vendors and research partners; drive interdisciplinary collaboration, integrating quantum technologies with classical AI/ML to enhance optimization and simulation capabilities.
  • Publish insights, whitepapers, and present findings at industry forums, serving as a visible thought leader representing KPMG's quantum capabilities; cultivate partnerships with universities, research institutes, and clients to prototype quantum solutions and evaluate their business impact
  • Lead business development efforts including proposal development, capability demonstrations, client workshops, and pipeline management
  • Mentor and develop quantum talent across the practice, including managers and junior team members; support recruiting and capability building initiatives
  • Act with integrity, professionalism, and personal responsibility to uphold KPMG's respectful and courteous work environment
Qualifications:
  • Minimum seven years recent experience in quantum research or development, with at least three years in a leadership or client-facing role; or at least ten years in adjacent fields (optimization, computational physics, operations research, machine learning) with demonstrated quantum leadership, preferably in a professional services setting
  • PhD in Quantum Computing, Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field required; MS with exceptional industry experience considered
  • Extensive hands-on experience with quantum programming frameworks (Qiskit, Cirq, PennyLane, Ocean SDK) and simulation tools; deep familiarity with NISQ device characteristics, limitations, and roadmaps
  • Demonstrated track record leading quantum projects that deliver business value in areas such as combinatorial optimization, simulation, or machine learning acceleration; experience managing client relationships and delivering complex technical engagements
  • Strong publication record and recognized expertise in quantum information science, algorithms, or applications
  • IBM Quantum Developer Certification or equivalent vendor credentials highly preferred
  • Travel 20-40% required to client engagements and industry collaborations

California Salary Range: $198000 - $352000
