The UCLA Labor Center is seeking an Associate Director of Foundation Relations (ADFR) to work with the Labor Center Director of Development, Center Director and staff to support the growing fundraising program, including the upcoming Comprehensive Campaign for the UCLA James Lawson Jr. Worker Justice Center and related signature programs. The ADFR must have initiative, self-confidence, mission alignment, and experience working with highly productive and collaborative teams. Under the direction of the Labor Center's Director of Development, and in consultation with the Center Director, the Associate Director of Foundation Relations is responsible for supporting the grant proposal development from conception to stewardship stages which includes utilizing a wide array of prospect research tools to research and analyze data as part of overall identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship efforts for foundation and contract prospects. Supporting cultivation and solicitation efforts, the ADFR will develop concept papers, letters of intent, grant proposals and development communication to identify and cultivate prospective funders for private support, identify a core group of prospective six-figure and seven-figure grant opportunities, and prepare for and participate in solicitations. The Labor Center's fundraising team includes the Director who oversees the fundraising program, the Associate Director of Development who focuses on individual major gifts, the capital campaign, and development events, and the contracts and grants program which this position will directly support. In partnerships with the Director of Development and Labor Center program directors and researchers, the ADFR will cultivate working relationships both internally and externally. Externally this role will create and build relationships with Foundation representatives and other Institutional Funders. Incumbent will have the opportunity to hone their fundraising skills and understanding of grants fundraising in a dynamic environment with a mission driven focus. Incumbent will manage a portfolio of funders, and proactively aim to increase giving from various funders.


Salary & Compensation

Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations. Qualifications

  • 2 years or more Minimum of two years of demonstrated experience as a grant proposal development officer. (Required) And
  • Or prior experience in related fundraising roles in fields such as work with labor, non-profit, community-based organizations, or higher education. (Required)
  • Experience with grant writing processes. (Required)
  • Experience working with donor database or similar membership or sales database and capacity to track various stages of solicitation cycles for various prospects and funders. (Required)
  • Excellent oral communication skills to collect and convey information with accuracy, diplomacy, and tact; ability to persuasively express mission of the UCLA Labor Center and its fundraising goals; especially as they relate to funding priorities at the UCLA Labor Center. (Required)
  • Excellent written communication skills to prepare letters, memos, reports, discussion documents, concept papers, proposals, and other creative and persuasive cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship materials for institutional funders. (Preferred)
  • Superior writing skills with excellent ability to synthesize information. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated skill in using a variety of electronic resources to find and compile information about prospective and current funders and affiliated individuals, and the ability to synthesize gathered material for incorporation into relevant development documents. (Required)
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with colleagues across a complex organization that values collaborative decision making; ability to build and sustain lasting relationships with internal and external constituents. (Required)
  • Detail oriented with ability to take initiative, work independently and accept responsibility; adept at setting priorities and managing work flow to fulfill objectives and meet goals according to deadlines in a dynamic and ever-changing environment. (Required)
  • Ability to run, analyze and summarize computer-generated reports; analyze data effectively to evaluate progress; recognize areas of weakness and recommend strategies that achieve stated objectives. (Required)
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of foundation and government sources; impeccable integrity and discretion in dealing with foundations, government representatives, donors, alumni, students, administrators and colleagues. (Required)
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft suite of applications as well as familiarity with other database, spreadsheet, scheduling and email applications; willingness to learn new programs and applications as needed. (Required)
  • Ability to work some weekends and evenings as needed. (Required)
  • Ability to support and at times oversee donor/development related events. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of principles and practices of fundraising in a university or institution of equivalent complexity with demonstrated ability to conceptualize and implement identification, cultivation and solicitation strategies and resources specific to institutional donor fundraising. (Required)
