The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) at UVA Health is a high-acuity, academically driven critical care environment dedicated to delivering exceptional, evidence-based care to some of the most medically complex adult patients in the region. As part of the Division of Pulmonary & Critical Care Medicine, our MICU team operates at the intersection of clinical excellence, teaching, and innovation-making it an ideal setting for advanced practice providers seeking both autonomy and robust interdisciplinary collaboration.
Our APPs are integral members of a cohesive team that includes PCCM faculty, fellows, residents, pharmacists, respiratory therapists, and nurses. The MICU culture prioritizes open communication, mutual respect, and shared decision-making, allowing APPs to practice at the top of their licensure while still benefiting from the mentorship and support of expert faculty and seasoned colleagues. Preferred Qualifications *Prior experience in a high-acuity medical ICU *Experience working in an academic medical center or teaching environment, with comfort collaborating alongside residents, fellows, and medical students Core Responsibilities Following a structured onboarding process, MICU APPs progress toward independent management of 4-6 ICU patients spanning a broad range of complex and high-acuity diagnoses. The practice model emphasizes APP autonomy supported by close collaboration with physician colleagues. As an academic medical center, UVA offers a rich environment grounded in continuous learning, teaching, and professional development. Additional Position Details: *12-hour shifts, structured to meet the equivalent of a 40 hour work week *MICU APPs work a rotating schedule that includes days, nights, weekends, and holidays. *Major holidays are assigned on a yearly rotational basis. Background checks and pre-employment health screenings will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment. All safety-sensitive positions with direct patient interaction also require a drug screen. Leadership
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Education: Graduate of an accredited graduate school of nursing or physician assistant program with a master's degree. Experience: Department and unit specific. Licensure: License or license eligible as an Advance Practice Provider (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Associate, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, and Certified Nurse Midwife) as set forth by the state of Virginia. If Nurse Practitioner, license to Practice as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia is required. Must demonstrate and maintain all credentialing and licensing requirements of UVA Health System, the Virginia Board of Medicine or the Virginia Board of Nursing, and appropriate certifying bodies. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) required. Current PALS/NRP, as required, specific to position. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) as required, specific to position. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, and repetitive); Repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull 50 - 100lbs. May be exposed to noise, radiation, radioactive materials, blood/body fluids and infectious disease. The starting base rate for this role is $129,323.00 annually.
