About the Job

This is a research assistant position to work with the Director of the Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science (MCPS) on completing a book. The project requires a focused and detail-oriented approach to gathering and organizing bibliographic materials, responding to emails related to the book project, liaising with other academics and press team members in preparing the materials for the publication process, and completing other tasks as they arise in relation to this project.

Job duties/Responsibilities:

  • Organizing components of the book
  • Gathering bibliographic information
  • Building an index
  • Summarizing materials when required
  • Responding to emails relating to research
  • Attending project meetings
  • Preparing progress reports
Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • BS with major in a science field and minor in philosophy or the reverse (double majors in a science and philosophy also considered)
  • Computer proficiency and ability to navigate multiple software applications
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional organizational, planning and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work independently, as a part of a team and with changing priorities
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain deadlines and prioritize assignments
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills
  • A degree in a field related to the study
  • Excellent administration skills
  • Knowledge of research methods

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with University of Minnesota (culture, policies, financial, etc.)
  • Experience with academic research, especially in either philosophy of science or the life sciences (broadly construed)
  • Ability to interact with staff, research collaborators (University of Minnesota and other institutions), students on a professional level
  • Experience with Google docs, Google Forms, and Box

The Minnesota Center for Philosophy of Science advances research and graduate training in the philosophy of science and related studies of science and technology. We foster a local community of scholars (from a number of different disciplines throughout the University of Minnesota as well as area colleges and universities) through a variety of activities and special events.

Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: $20.60 / hour; depending on education/qualifications/experience.
