The Duke Divinity School is seeking a detail-oriented and collaborative Director of Capacity Building Support to join our team at a nationally recognized, Lilly Endowment-funded intermediary organization dedicated to strengthening Christian institutions that support congregations. In this pivotal role, you will provide operational leadership for capacity building grant program in coordination with the Director of Grants Operations Director. You will be responsible for recruitment, adjudication, funding recommendations, report analysis, support services and overall evaluation. You will oversee several cohorts of grantees and contracting with consultants for specialized tasks and monitoring conflicts of interest of consultants with constituents. The position is supervised by the Executive Director for Grants and Services.

This position is 100% funded by a sponsored program that is currently funded by a grant through December 31, 2028. The department is a Lilly Endowment funded intermediary organization and is a unit of Duke Divinity School.

Minimum Requirements:



  • Work requires a general business background, generally equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a business-related field.
  • This position isonsite at Duke University in Durham, NC. After the 90 day review process, there is a possibility for a hybrid schedule.


Experience Qualifications:

Work requires 4 years of relevant experience; or equivalent combination of training and experience in organizational capacity building and business models OR ANY OTHER EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Preferred Qualifications:



  • Strong preference for applicants that have completed M Div or equivalent.
  • Strong preference for applicants with experience with lay or clergy leadership in congregations.
  • Strong preference for applicants with supervision of staff and contractors.

In this role as Director of Capacity Building Support, you will:




  • Direct a complex grant initiative that includes multiple cohorts of grantees at every stage including recruitment, adjudication, advising services, gatherings and report analysis. Collaborate with colleagues who direct operations to ensure consistency with departmental policies and provide seamless experience for grant applicants.
  • Develop and recommend requests for proposals based on desired impact.
  • Write and consult in subject area of organizational practices and their role in sustainable economic modules for organizations.
  • Recruit, train and supervise consultants with specific expertise to provide support for grantees in individual and group settings.
  • Engage, train and supervise contractors who will facilitate events, adjudicate proposals and evaluate reports. Identify, monitor and minimize conflicts of interest between contractors and applicants or grantees. Evaluate quality of contractors' work and make recommendations about future opportunities for growth and work.
  • Analyze data gathered from applications for trends. Compare the trends with available research. Report themes and make recommendations based on findings.
  • Assist in the preparation of grant proposals to include compilation of data and preparation of budget projections; monitor and verify expenditures.
  • Collaborate with the department's director of communications in formulating and implementing marketing and communications plans to advance grant program objectives.
  • Serve as departmental liaison with select peer organizations that provide grants and support services to Lilly Endowment grantees in order to provide peer support and collaboration on select projects.
  • Ensure compliance with University and sponsoring agency policies and procedures.
  • Prepare administrative reports for submission to sponsoring agency.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $62,694.00 to USD $107,633.00.
