The Duke University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is seeking a Sr. Business Manager to join our talented team. In the Sr. Business Manager role, you will be responsible for some of the Department's highest-level business management and critical functions spanning finance, budgeting, personnel coordination, space/facilities, policy interpretation, reporting/analytics, and operational problem-solving. This role will represent the Associate Chief Administrative Officer in meetings and administrative affairs.

Minimum Requirements:

Education/Training

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Accounting or a closely related field.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of eight years progressively responsible experience in administrative management, to include proficiency in budgeting, grants and contracts, personnel supervision and space and facilities management.

A Master's degree in Business Administration, Hospital Administration, Accounting or a closely related field may substitute for two years of required experience.

OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

This position is working on-site for a minimum of three days weekly in North Carolina and has potential to flex to remote work based on operational demands.

Position Description:

The Senior Business Manager provides senior-level administrative, financial, and operational leadership for a complex academic clinical department. This role partners closely with department leadership, faculty, and health system stakeholders to support the clinical, academic, research, and educational missions of the organization. The position is responsible for stewardship of significant operating budgets, physician compensation administration, workforce and space planning, compliance, and leadership-level reporting to enable informed, data-driven decision-making.

Financial Strategy, Budgeting, and Fiscal Management

The Senior Business Manager provides strategic financial leadership for departmental clinical and academic operations, overseeing large and complex budgets, forecasts, and multi-year financial projections. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, compliance with University and Health System policies, and proactive identification of financial risks and opportunities in partnership with department and division leadership.

Faculty Compensation and Incentive Plan Administration

This position leads the development, administration, and ongoing monitoring of the Departmental Faculty Incentive Compensation Plan. The role includes modeling and tracking variable incentive programs, evaluating performance against plan metrics, and advising leadership on compensation outcomes and alignment with departmental goals.

Reporting, Analytics, and Decision Support

The Senior Business Manager delivers routine and ad hoc operational and financial analyses to support leadership decision-making. Responsibilities include identifying trends and variances, translating data into actionable insights, and preparing executive-level dashboards, forecasts, and presentations.

Operational Coordination and Resource Stewardship

The role coordinates operational planning related to staffing, space, facilities, and capital resources to support clinical growth and academic priorities. This includes serving as a liaison with facilities and administrative partners, overseeing purchasing and asset management, and supporting the onboarding and integration of new practices and service lines.

Workforce and Personnel Management

This position supervises staff supporting core business functions and provides guidance on workforce planning and personnel matters. The Senior Business Manager advises leadership on recruitment, appointments, compensation administration, employee relations, and adherence to employment policies.

Compliance, Policy Interpretation, and Risk Management

The Senior Business Manager ensures departmental operations comply with institutional and external requirements by interpreting policies, advising leadership, and identifying operational or financial risks. The role supports the development and implementation of mitigation strategies to maintain compliance and operational integrity.

Leadership Representation and Stakeholder Engagement

The role serves as a key liaison among faculty, health system partners, and administrative stakeholders, representing departmental administrative leadership as assigned. The Senior Business Manager contributes to strategic planning, major initiatives, and business plan development, ensuring alignment across missions.

Anticipated Pay Range: Duke University provides an annual base salary range for this position as USD $78,161.00 to USD $156,319.00.
