Job Summary

Responsible for managing the administrative operations of a school, OR a medium to large academic department, OR several small departments within a college, OR a medium to large non-academic department. Typically includes all or most of the following functions: IT, facilities, student services, contracts and grants, budgetary financial management and / or human resources. Manages a professional staff, typically large, and / or comprised of professionals in various fields. Assumes accountability for decisions made by subordinates. Performs long and short term planning for function. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

Reporting to and in partnership with the Senior Director, Operations/Chief of Staff, the Director of Operations is responsible for the comprehensive operations management of the department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences with oversight spanning all aspects related to human resources, operational infrastructure, facilities, space planning, building & systems access, and information technology. Core responsibilities include but are not limited to 1) monitoring and evaluating workflow processes and approving activities in systems such as Project One/Oracle Enterprise, MyTime, Door Access System, etc. 2) conducting systematic reviews of departmental procedures and 3) leading the planning & execution of administrative improvements, ensuring simultaneous reviews & updates to departmental policies and internal controls as needed.

The Director of Operations serves as a primary administrative consultant internally to faculty, staff leadership, etc. and well as to external units such as HR/Comp/LER, etc. related to workforce planning, recruitment strategy, JD review, compensation analysis, position reclassifications, etc.

This role achieves departmental objectives through direct management of a team of analysts and administrators and through close collaboration with the Senior Director/Chief of Staff to develop short- and long-term operational strategies & solutions, ensuring efficiency, compliance, and measurable organizational outcomes.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences (Ob, Gyn & RS) is a major academic Department in the School of Medicine, engaged in clinical, research and training activities at the Parnassus, Mount Zion, and Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital campuses, the new Betty Irene Moore Women's Hospital at Mission Bay, as well as satellite locations throughout the Bay Area, with an annual operating budget of $164 million. The Department has 134 full-time faculty, 117 other academic appointees, 13 post-doctoral fellows, 22 clinical fellows, 32 residents, 138 voluntary clinical faculty and 270 staff.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in administration and management with increasing levels of complexity or an equivalent combinaion of education and experience.
  • Minimum five years of supervisory/lead experience
  • Minimum 6 years of experience in human resources, administration, operations, and risk management planning as well as trend analysis, policy development, and improvement initiatives.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
  • Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing with all levels of staff, faculty, trainees, etc.
  • Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Proven track record of excellent customer service to include good listening, critical thinking, and analytical skills, while managing multiple priorities.
  • Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
  • Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
  • Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others

Preferred Qualifications


  • Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Skills to work collaboratively with other locations.
  • Experience working in an academic medical institution.
  • Excellent leadership, fiscal, and operations management skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with physicians/faculty, senior leadership/management, and staff from all disciplineSkills to work collaboratively with other locations.
