Senior Network Infrastructure Engineer
Job Summary
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer serves as a key contributor in the planning, design, construction, renovation, and delivery of infrastructure across UCSF facilities. This role oversees the build-out, expansion, repair, and modernization of Infrastructure services to support the university's academic, medical, and research missions. Working in close coordination with UCSF departments, project managers, design consultants, vendors, and internal ITS teams, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer provides technical direction and construction oversight for all phases of infrastructure deployment-including low-voltage systems, copper and fiber cabling, endpoint, telephony, DaaS and health care modality installations. The role ensures infrastructure components are integrated into building renovation and new construction projects in alignment with UCSF IT design standards and long-term infrastructure strategies.
The Senior Infrastructure Engineer manages and inspects the installation, upgrade, and repair of both inside-plant and outside-plant communication systems, ensuring compliance with construction drawings, specifications, and code requirements. Responsibilities include coordinating field activities, reviewing as-built documentation, conducting site walks, resolving construction conflicts, and ensuring high-quality installation and service delivery. Through proactive engagement and technical expertise, the Senior Infrastructure Engineer ensures UCSF's IT infrastructure continues to evolve, scale, and perform to meet the demands of the Health, Education, Research, and Business enterprises.
The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors, including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The annual salary range for this position is $113,800 - $242,800. Note: Certain terms and conditions of employment for this position, including the rate of pay, benefits, etc., are currently subject to negotiation with the appropriate union. The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the UCSF's network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or four years of relevant experience in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems.
- Seven (7) or more years of experience working in one or more of the following fields: communication infrastructure, information technology or network operations.
- Extensive experience delivering reliable and quality communication infrastructure services. Proven experience supporting large-scale network implementations and upgrades, ensuring the delivery of reliable and quality network services.
- Extensive experience delivering solutions based on data communication industry standards such as ANSI, ITA, EIA, and BICSI. Significant experience complying with state, local, NEC, and NFPA codes and standards.
- Extensive experience with the installation and maintenance of conduits, fiber-optic cables, and copper cables. Significant experience with designing and deploying large enterprise cabling infrastructure, and designing outside plant conduit and cable infrastructure systems.
- Significant experience designing the layout of horizontal cable pathways, telecom rooms, and backbone infrastructure. Experience conducting budget and pricing activities for infrastructure cabling systems.
- Demonstrated ability with Word, Excel, Visio, MS Project, E-builder Copper/Fiber, AutoCAD , Bluebeam and other relevant software and network testing tools. Proficiency in reading, reviewing, and analyzing network construction drawings, and authoring standard project-specific documents, business and scope requirements, and project proposal requests.
- Proficiency in L2 protocols including STP, DHCP, 802.1X, LACP, MLAG, VXLAN bridging, etc. along with addressing mechanisms (DNS, DHCP, IPAM, or similar), and practical experience with L1 technologies (SMF, MMF, DWDM, Transceivers, AOC, Twinax, Fiber fan-outs, or similar). Strong understanding of various network hardware platforms such as Cisco, Aruba, Juniper, Brocade, and Juniper.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and is able to communicate complex technical ideas to a diverse community of colleagues and stakeholders. Can relay technical information to audiences of technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Able to establish and advance positive working relationships and a strong rapport with a diverse community of colleagues including team members, stakeholders, and customers.
- Advanced organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and deliver concurrent projects to various stakeholder types. Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
- Advanced problem-solving skills; ability to uncover the root of difficult problems and scope solutions based on knowledge of available resources and timelines, as well as awareness of vision and strategy. Seeks information from multiple and diverse sources to inform solutions. Demonstrated ability to make decisions with integrity.
