Plans, directs and supervises team members in the day to day operations within various departments of the store. Serves as the mentor and coach for all team members. Implements strategies to improve customer service, drive store sales while ensuring customer needs are met and service is quick and efficient. Maintains store appearance with a focus on prime shopping hours, product presentation and company standards.
Job Summary

The General Merchandise Team Leader is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations, performance, and development of the General Merchandise team, Pricing Team, Planogram Team, Backroom inventory Team. This role ensures operational excellence, financial performance, inventory accuracy, customer experience, and team engagement across all assigned departments. The Team Leader partners closely with peer leaders and area leadership to deliver results while modeling Meijer values, Truly Human Service, and DE&I principles. This position requires Open Availability all days of the week

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Communication

  • Review email, Meijer365, and task management systems multiple times daily; assign and follow up on department tasks.
  • Lead daily huddles and ensure clear, consistent communication is cascaded to all team members.
  • Conduct survival walks and complete shift-to-shift handoffs.
  • Communicate effectively with peer leaders to ensure smooth operational transitions between shifts.
  • Serve as Duty Manager / Store Director in Charge (SDIC) when scheduled.

Operations & Financial Performance

  • Review weekly financials, performance metrics, labor reports, and other operational data; develop and execute action plans.
  • Stay current on local market trends, seasonal priorities, and Meijer marketing strategies related to General Merchandise.
  • Monitor and control shrink and financial outcomes within assigned departments.
  • Review inventory results and partner with leadership to address gaps and opportunities.
  • Review the IMS Dashboard daily (9 a.m. and 3 p.m.) and take action as needed.

Team Development & Performance Management

  • Maintain accountability for overall department performance, including coaching, behavior management, and Empower conversations.
  • Participate in interviewing, hiring, onboarding, observation, and coaching of team members and leads.
  • Serve as a certified trainer; provide hands-on training, mentoring, and final sign-off on certifications.
  • Monitor training completion and compliance dashboards and address deficiencies.
  • Champion DE&I programs and ensure inclusive, respectful behavior across the team.

Scheduling & Timekeeping

  • Review Kronos attendance daily by 9 a.m.; address incidents such as missed punches, late arrivals, early departures, shift swaps, and time-off requests.
  • Partner with area leadership to write accurate schedules that align with labor budgets and business needs.

Customer Experience

  • Own the Truly Human Service experience within General Merchandise.
  • Handle customer complaints and escalations professionally and efficiently.

Vendor & Cross-Functional Partnerships

  • Ensure successful vendor relationships and hold vendors accountable to expectations.
  • Follow store-to-corporate communication protocols for tickets, work orders, and Helix requests; escalate and follow up as needed.
  • May serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for company pilots, market initiatives, or training programs.

  • Ensure a positive company image by providing courteous, friendly, and efficient service to customers and team members.
  • Responsible for staffing, selection and hiring to achieve staffing needs.
  • Promotes succession planning by providing career paths, identifying development needs for the team members, and being involved with and accountable for promotion decisions.
  • Documents and applies disciplinary actions and makes recommendations concerning discharge.
  • Responsible for P&L, achieving sales and maintaining shrink for the department.
  • Models exceptional, fast and friendly customer service.
  • Communicates the Meijer Friendly Initiative in all team meetings and conversations.
  • Mentors and coaches the team members to ensure customer service and sales goals are exceeded and the area is maintained to Meijer standards.
  • Ensures the team is thoroughly trained in all aspects of their jobs and have completed all required training.
  • Spends majority of time within the store communicating with customers and team members to ensure exceptional service is being delivered.
  • Communicates the Meijer Friendly Initiative in all team meetings and conversations.
  • Promotes a safe work environment.
  • Reliable and consistent attendance required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You Bring with You (Qualifications):

  • High school diploma or its equivalent required.
  • 2-3 years of related retail experience.
  • 3-5 years of retail leadership experience prefered
  • Rotational assignments in other areas of the store such as meat, bakery, produce and deli; also customer service and product flow experience is helpful.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate to team members in the organization in a way that provides clear and precise direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve conflict and by addressing root cause issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze financial and statistical information and use that information to make informed decisions. Demonstrated ability to teach suggestive selling.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead an organization that practices working safely at all times
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor team members in all areas of the organization including SDITs, team members in hourly positions and team leaders.
  • Successful completion of all required certifications.

The pay range for this position is listed below.

$18.45 - $27.05

This pay range represents the minimum and maximum base pay for the position, which is determined by factors such as market data, the qualifications required, the level of responsibilities associated with the role and other roles at this same level. Your specific pay rate within this range will be based on your experience, qualifications, and skills compared to the internal team you'll be joining.
