Web Director
Job Summary Works independently to develop and maintain complex web sites and develop, enhance, and maintain a variety of digital properties with a broad audience and / or with a high consequence of error. Mentors less experienced staff. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results.
The Department of Surgery (DoS) is looking for a creative Web Director who will further the Department's mission by supporting our evolving portfolio of 100+ websites. Reporting directly to the Associate Chair of Finance & Administration, the Web Director works closely with a wide range of stakeholders and units to achieve DoS goals within the existing framework of UCSF websites and must be able to integrate and present information in a clear, efficient, and user-friendly manner. The Web Director will be responsible for leading the development of websites, providing content management, content strategy, and project management. The Web Director will also use his or her skills as a seasoned, experienced communications professional to produce design and layout for a variety of non-routine and moderately complex website applications; ensure search engine optimization; and develop website content strategy for center, lab, and divisional websites. The Web Director also is responsible for website maintenance and updating internal and external pages to reflect current departmental and divisional activities and programs related to the Department's research, clinical, educational, and public service missions. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $113,900- $170,900 (Annual Rate). Department Description The mission of the UCSF Department of Surgery (DoS) is threefold: to develop the next generation of leaders in surgery; to provide outstanding quality clinical care that is cost effective, yet compassionate; and to make significant advances in scientific knowledge and clinical practice through basic and clinical research. Care of patients is what attracted our faculty and residents to surgery, and it continues to be our main focus.
The Department is comprised of eleven divisions that include Adult Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatrics Cardiothoracic Surgery General Surgery, Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery, Pediatric Surgery, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, Surgical Oncology, Transplant Surgery, and Vascular & Endovascular Surgery. Our surgeons provide care at locations throughout greater San Francisco including: UCSF Medical Center at Parnassus (Moffitt-Long Hospital), UCSF Medical Center at Mt. Zion, UCSF Medical Center at Mission Bay, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital in Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, San Francisco VA Medical Center, and Alameda County Medical Center in Oakland. Our residents also rotate through UCSF Medical Center, Kaiser Permanente, and California Pacific Medical Center.
The Department of Surgery Chair's Office is an extremely high profile, fast paced environment with a very diverse range of contacts and needs which require an immediate and accurate response, handled with confidentiality and compliance. The Chair's Office is responsible for management, direction and oversight of over 400 faculty (clinical and research), trainees and staff personnel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
- 5+ years of related experience.
- Advanced knowledge of fundamentals of design and implementation.
- Advanced knowledge of front- / back-end web development using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP and other relevant programming languages to build/maintain the Department of Surgery's 100+ websites.
- Advanced ability to implement UX/UI design principles to create intuitive, user-friendly, and visually appealing websites.
- Strong Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing skills to improve site visibility, ranking/user engagement through data-driven strategies.
- Expertise on Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 and compliance to ensure digital content meets the Americans with Disabilities Act Compliance.
- Advanced understanding of technical language and assignment requirements.
- Proven ability to manage web security, including data encryption, firewalls and secure authentication to protect sensitive information.
- Expert troubleshooting/problem-solving skills to quickly identify/resolve technical issues, ensuring optimal site performance.
- Advanced knowledge of digital communication media, including content management systems and/or relevant web applications used for website production/organization-specific computer application programs.
- Proficiency in content management systems, e.g. Drupal Content Management System, ensuring effective content updates and site management.
- Advanced skills in website analytics/performance monitoring using tools like Google Analytics and Google Search Console to track user engagement and optimize site functionality.
- Advanced technical skills in computer applications for web production, image handling, publishing/design, illustration, presentation, preparation, animation, web interaction and/or other state-of-the-art web communication capabilities.
- Advanced ability to develop/implement digital marketing strategies, e.g., email campaigns, social media integration and multimedia content.
- Proficiency in web-based project management tools like Asana or Jira to simultaneously plan, execute and track progress on multiple web initiatives.
- Advanced understanding of the organization's processes, procedures and applicable rules/regulations for web communication.
- Expert in complying with institutional branding guidelines/regulations for digital communications.
- Ability to align website and digital communication strategies with departmental policies/objectives to ensure consistency/effectiveness.
- Advanced knowledge of the organization, including its achievements, goals, objectives, vision and mission, and how digital communication can effectively convey/advance the message to audiences.
- Ability to craft digital content strategies reflecting the mission and objectives of the Department of Surgery, ensuring impactful messaging.
- Experience collaborating with faculty, researchers and staff to develop web content that enhances outreach/engagement with target audiences.
- Advanced skill to monitor and assess processes/services and make necessary improvements.
- Expertise in conducting regular audits and performance reviews of web platforms to identify areas of improvement and ensure alignment with best practices.
- Ability to implement iterative web development methodologies to enhance website functionality/user experience.
- Advanced skills to complete projects within budget/time constraints.
- Experience managing website redesign projects from inception to completion, ensuring alignment with organizational goals, timeline and budget constraints.
- Advanced skills in interpersonal communication, political acumen, and troubleshooting and applying proactive/positive solutions.
- Ability to liaise with stakeholders across departments, translating technical requirements into accessible/actionable plans.
- Ability to mediate and resolve conflicts related to digital communication strategies, ensuring team consensus/collaboration.
