What to Expect
Tesla's Lithium and Recycling team is looking for a highly motivated I&E Technician Intern will gain hands-on experience supporting the maintenance, troubleshooting, calibration, and installation of instrumentation and electrical systems in an industrial environment for a novel chemical plant near Corpus Christi, TX. I&E activities include supporting equipment in development, installation, commissioning, maintenance, retrofitting and production. This role will work closely with engineering to handle fast paced challenges in an innovative design space.
What You'll Do
- Assist in Commission, calibrate, and maintain all process instrumentation
- Learn Electrical and instrumentation installation for low voltage applications and troubleshooting electrical and instrumentation designs for packaged equipment
- Utilize DCS/PLC software to troubleshoot control systems
- Redline schematics/loop sheets to reflect field changes
- Basic mechanical assembly and maintenance tasks including bolting brackets, removing/installing inline instruments, and basic valve maintenance
- Serve as system owner, independently managing assigned I&E systems by identifying needs, planning work, and implementing solutions with minimal supervision
What You'll Bring
- Currently enrolled in a Del Mar College technical/vocational program pursuing a Degree in Instrumentation Technology, Electrical Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, or a closely related field (or recent graduate)
- Basic understanding of electrical principles, circuits, and instrumentation concepts (coursework in DC/AC circuits, electronics, or process controls preferred) and strong safety awareness and willingness to follow strict safety protocols in an industrial setting
- Ability to read and interpret basic electrical schematics, P&IDs, and technical manuals (with guidance)
- Mechanical aptitude and comfort working with hand tools, multimeters, and basic test equipment
- Reliable, detail-oriented, and eager to learn in a hands-on environment
- Willingness to work in an industrial plant environment (may include outdoor work, heights, confined spaces, and exposure to noise/chemicals with proper PPE)
- Must have command of the English language, both written and verbal
Essential Physical Demands:
- Ability to stand and walk for up to 12 hours a day, up stairs
- Frequently and repetitively, lift, push and carry up to 50 lbs., including the ability to carry 50 lbs. up and down stairs
- Wearing Personal Protective Equipment, including but not limited to: Safety glasses, safety shoes, hard hats, respiratory protection, and adhering to prescribed safety rules and guidelines
- Ability to work at heights with appropriate fall protection equipment
