ABOUT THE ROLE

The Environmental Specialist will play a key role in developing, implementing, and continuously improving strategies, programs, and systems that ensure full compliance with environmental laws and regulations. This position supports the achievement of the companies and customers' environmental policies, goals, targets, and compliance commitments through effective program execution and proactive environmental management.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain environmental databases, ensure regulatory compliance, and serve as one of the company's environmental representatives.
  • Support planning and execution of environmentally compliant construction activities, including mapping access routes, sequencing work, and marking sensitive resources using GIS tools.
  • Assist in coordination of implementation/maintenance of erosion control measures, and restoration/site stabilization efforts.
  • Interpret environmental regulations, assess impacts on operations, and ensure all permit conditions, deadlines, and reporting requirements are met.
  • Conduct field inspections, audits, and monitoring to verify compliance with project plans, permits, waste management requirements, and environmental protection standards.
  • Respond to environmental incidents by collecting field data, assessing conditions, and coordinating corrective actions.
  • Perform hazardous material sampling and manage construction wastes through coordination with vendors and subcontractors.
  • Install environmental signage, document observations (including good catches and near misses), and communicate required actions to project teams.
  • Provide environmental orientations and training for construction crews and perform routine safety and environmental observations.
  • Ensure spill response materials are available and support crews with supplies as needed.
  • Safely promote environmental compliance and support field teams in maintaining proper environmental and safety controls.
  • Regular and predictable attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.

ABOUT YOU

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 to 4 years of experience as an Environmental Specialist or in a closely related environmental field, preferably within the construction or infrastructure industry.
  • Experience using ArcGIS or comparable GIS platforms for field data collection, mapping, and spatial analysis.

Preferred Education

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Natural Resources, or a related field.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and problem solving skills with the ability to make sound decisions in the field.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and highly effective organizational abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Proven ability to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary, team oriented environments.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including advanced Excel capabilities for data management and analysis.
  • Ability to travel frequently to outdoor project locations as required.
  • Capability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs across uneven or rugged terrain.
  • Willingness to work in varying and sometimes challenging weather conditions.
  • Strong knowledge of environmental regulations, industry best practices, and emerging technologies relevant to environmental compliance.
