The Histology Technician I will be responsible for performing histology tasks for Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and non-GLP pre-clinical studies, including study preparation, tissue trimming, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and slide quality control assessment. The histology laboratory performs paraffin and plastic resin embedding procedures and the histology technician will be involved in the conduct of both media types, as needed, at the directive of the laboratory manager.

Key Accountabilities

  • Creates labeled cassettes and slides in preparation for laboratory study workflow.
  • Processes tissue samples efficiently according to established laboratory protocols.
  • Embeds tissue specimens into blocks with precision to ensure proper orientation.
  • Executes high-quality microtomy to generate consistent, defect-free tissue sections.
  • Mounts tissue specimens onto slides accurately to maintain integrity for diagnostic review.
  • Evaluates blocks and slides for anatomical landmarks to ensure preparation meets strict quality standards.
  • Maintains meticulous study records in full compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Analyzes and interprets study-associated data to ensure technical accuracy.
  • Applies a deep understanding of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and GLP regulations (21 CFR, Part 58) to all laboratory operations and study services.
  • Utilizes Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook) and laboratory information systems to manage data and communication.
  • Records all GLP and process-specific training to ensure continuous compliance.
  • Manages a current Curriculum Vitae (CV) and professional training file to meet auditing standards.
  • Organizes study data and specimens securely to ensure confidentiality and easy retrieval for compliance.

Other

  • Follows all SOPs and other applicable laboratory or company policies and procedures.
  • Maintains confidential information.
  • Supports and participates in company initiatives as directed.
  • Performs periodic review of all applicable SOPs to ensure accuracy and confirm procedures are being performed according to SOPs.Participates in SOP writing, review, and revision, as needed.
  • Completes training requirements as assigned and maintains appropriate training documentation.
  • Maintains compliance and adheres to all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and good documentation practices.
  • Maintains a basic knowledge of and ensures compliance with Good Laboratory Practices, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Association of Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), and other applicable regulations.
  • Interacts with clients, other employees, and the community in a professional manner.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Critical Success Factors

  • Technical Precision: Consistently produces high-quality slides through expert trimming, embedding, microtomy, staining and coverslip mounting.
  • Ability to read and interpret test results and instrument specifications.
  • Has strong organization skills - establishes and prioritizes tasks to manage time and resources appropriately and identifies resources to meet objectives in a timely manner.
  • Exhibits an aptitude for quality, an eye for detail, the ability to follow written instructions and work with a minimum of supervision.
  • Communicates effectively with team members and clients to ensure study goals are met.

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
  • One year of relevant hands-on laboratory industry experience
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety (OSHA) and Good Documentation Practices (GDP)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in biology, Chemistry, or Medical Technology
  • Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) experience
  • Basic proficiency in tissue trimming and paraffin embedding
  • Familiarity with routine Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) staining protocols
  • Certified Histotechnician (HT) or Histotechnologist (HTL), or American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) board certified eligible
  • Knowledge of or experience in plastic resin embedding and/or sectioning, special staining techniques or Immunohistochemistry (IHC)

  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English
  • Work is normally performed in a typical interior office or laboratory environment
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • The noise level is usually moderate
  • Requires moderate physical activity with frequent talking, standing, walking and repetitive movement of hands and fingers, reaching and lifting 10 -50 pounds.
  • Use of PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) when required (i.e., able to wear latex or nitrile gloves, lab coat, dust mask or respirator, and safety glasses as required)
  • This position will frequently be involved with sharps, solvents, irritants, acids, bases, and other hazardous chemicals, flammable materials, and biohazards. Due to exposure to hazardous biological material (which may include HPB positive specimens), immunization to Hepatitis B and/or other diseases may be a requirement.

*This position could be offered at different levels for candidates who qualify with a combination of advanced levels of education and/or years of experience. The salary range is $24-$28/hr and will adjust along with the level of the role to match the person's relevant experience and/or education level.
