Position Overview

We are seeking a motivated and responsible undergraduate student to assist with corneal imaging as part of a philanthropy-funded, non-sponsored research study. This work involves imaging patient-subjects who elect to participate in an already IRB-approved protocol. The study utilizes a research-use ophthalmic imaging device provided under a research agreement from Oculus. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in clinical research, ophthalmology, imaging technologies, or health sciences. Training will be provided.

Key Responsibilities



  • Greet, orient, and interact with patient-subjects enrolled in the study.
  • Seat subjects at the ophthalmic imaging device and guide them through the non-contact corneal imaging process.
  • Operate the imaging system, including positioning subjects and capturing images.
  • Ensure proper use, care, and basic maintenance of the research device
  • Follow all study procedures and IRB-approved protocols related to patient interaction and data handling.
  • Communicate effectively with the research team regarding workflow and other equipment and/or subject-related issues.



Required Qualifications



  • Undergraduate student in good academic standing.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a professional, patient-friendly demeanor.
  • Demonstrated strengths in reliability, punctuality, and attention to detail.
  • Comfort interacting with research participants.



Desired Qualifications



  • Interest in clinical research, ophthalmology, imaging science, or health-related fields.
  • Prior experience in a clinical or research setting



Training & Support

Training will be provided. Students will learn:



  • Proper operation of the Oculus corneal imaging device.
  • Study protocols and subject interaction procedures.
  • Basic imaging quality checks and safe handling of research equipment.



Greg Schmidt will serve as the direct supervisor for this position. This position will work out the of Clinical Trials Research rooms of the Department of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences located on the lower level of Pomerantz Family Pavilion (200 Hawkins Drive Iowa City IA 52242).

Work Schedule



  • Part-time hours, typically during Tuesday and Thursday clinic blocks (specific times to be arranged).
  • Flexible scheduling may be possible to accommodate academic course commitments.
