The co-op will work closely with team members both within computational genomics and the broader research organization to analyze next-generation sequencing data from gene editing experiments and develop standardized and automated workflows to enable higher throughput and greater insight. Additional opportunities will be available to grow skills in scientific communication and the use of AI in research.

Responsibilities:

  • Execute analyses of sequencing data from gene editing experiments using internal tools to quantify editing rates across various in vitro and in vivo experiments.
  • Compare efficacy of tested therapeutic approaches across varying parameters to build consensus and guide further development of LNP-based gene editing approaches
  • Generate clear visualizations and summaries to communicate experimental results to cross-functional stakeholders
  • Build automated, integrity-focused analysis pipelines to improve throughput and deepen insight from experimental data
  • Work in cloud and local compute environments, including AWS and/or HPC infrastructure, to support scalable analysis of large genomics datasets
  • Utilize available AI infrastructure and tools to accelerate development of reproducible code and enhance cross-study comparisons
  • Regularly share updates in both formal and informal meetings with the computational genomics team while keeping analysis documentation well-organized and reproducible

What you will need to succeed:

  • Enrolled in a graduate program, pursuing a Ph.D. in either the 4th or 5th year, in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Genetics, Genomics, Computer Science, Statistics, or related quantitative/biological field.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated ability to plan, execute, and interpret computational analyses.
  • Strong written and verbal scientific communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment and to proactively seek guidance when needed.
  • Demonstrated expertise in analysis of next-generation sequencing data analysis
  • Experience with Python and/or R for scientific data analysis.
  • Experience with developing and testing computational pipelines use available tools (ex: Snakemake, Nextflow).
  • Experience working in one of AWS, Linux, or HPC/cluster environments for large-scale data analysis.
  • Familiarity with reproducible research practices such as version control, notebooks, documentation, and well-structured code organization.
  • Capacity to work onsite full-time in Boston, MA
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States, now and in the future. Please note that Vertex does not provide sponsorship for internships or entry level roles within this part of the organization.
