The Role

The Chief Executive, Montana Service Area provides overall strategic, operational, and financial leadership for Providence's integrated healthcare delivery system across Western Montana. This role is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality, cost effective, and mission aligned care consistent with Providence's values, goals, and strategic priorities.

The Montana Service Area includes Providence St. Patrick Hospital in Missoula and Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Polson, and partners closely with Providence Medical Group Montana to deliver a coordinated continuum of care. The $500M delivery system serves a primary service area of approximately 170,000 residents across Missoula, Lake, and Ravalli Counties and functions as the regional referral center for Western Montana.

This role partners with the Washington-Montana Executive Council and System leaders to advance integrated care delivery, strengthen performance, and improve the health and well-being of the communities served.

What You'll Do



  • Executive Leadership & Strategy
  • Provide visionary, decisive leadership in advancing Service Area strategy within an evolving healthcare environment and competitive landscape.
  • Lead strategic and annual planning processes, ensuring alignment with Providence system and regional priorities.
  • Serve as a transformation leader, guiding the organization through change while maintaining focus on quality, access, and sustainability.
  • Operational & Financial Stewardship
  • Oversee Service Area operations, financial performance, and capital management in alignment with regional and system processes.
  • Partner with core leaders and Shared Services to reduce costs, enhance revenues, and maximize operational efficiencies.
  • Establish organizational structures and management systems that support administrative and clinical integration across hospitals and services.
  • Integrated Care Delivery
  • Advance an integrated vision for the Service Area by strengthening coordination across hospitals, medical groups, and affiliated services.
  • Organize the care network to provide a responsive continuum of services that meets individual and community needs.
  • Partner with regional and system business line leaders to support growth, innovation, and access.
  • Collaboration & Relationship Building
  • Foster strong collaboration across departments, programs, medical staff, and affiliated services to ensure a unified approach to care.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with community leaders, employers, health plans, providers, and academic partners to improve community health.
  • Serve as Providence's senior representative with local, state, and federal elected officials in partnership with Government Affairs.
  • Governance, Mission & Community Engagement
  • Manage and support the Service Area Community Mission Board, ensuring fulfillment of delegated accountabilities.
  • Represent the Service Area at community events, legislative forums, and regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure Providence's mission and values are fully integrated into all programs, services, and leadership practices.

  • Build, lead, and sustain diverse, high performing leadership teams.

What You'll Bring



  • Education & Experience
  • Master's Degree in Healthcare Administration, Hospital Administration, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Minimum of six (6) years of senior leadership experience within a healthcare delivery organization with multiple sites of care and significant revenue responsibility.
  • Broad knowledge of healthcare trends, integrated delivery systems, and managed care models, including capitation and contracting.
  • Leadership Capabilities
  • Demonstrated strategic, operational, and financial acumen with the ability to make thoughtful, well supported decisions.
  • Proven ability to lead transformation and manage complexity in highly matrixed environments.
  • Strong consensus building, facilitation, and change management skills.

The full pay range is listed in accordance with applicable law. Final compensation will be determined based on qualifications, experience, organizational compensation alignment, and the approved hiring department budget for the position. This position may also be eligible for incentive compensation and benefits.

At Providence we believe in the importance of human connection and the impact of in-person collaboration towards team cohesion and caregiver engagement. Further, we want our leaders to live in or near the communities we serve. Therefore, leaders applying for this role will be required to work a hybrid schedule, which consists of three days onsite, two days remote and live within a reasonable commuting distance to the ministry or service area they support and lead.

Posted are the minimum and the maximum wage rates on the wage range for this position. The successful candidate's placement on the wage range for this position will be determined based upon relevant job experience and other applicable factors. These amounts are the base pay range; additional compensation may be available for this role, such as shift differentials, standby/on-call, overtime, premiums, extra shift incentives, or bonus opportunities.
