About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what's possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

We are seeking a Senior Analyst, Indirect Tax to help build and scale a technology-forward indirect tax function that supports Rivian's growth across products, channels, and geographies. You will anchor recurring indirect tax compliance, accounting, and analytics while helping modernize how indirect tax work is structured, automated, and documented. This role sits at the intersection of Finance - Indirect Tax, process design, digital enablement, and AI-enabled tooling. You will work across ERP, billing, procurement, and external tax engines, as well as AI copilots, chat-based research tools, and analytics platforms, to simplify and strengthen how indirect tax is executed day to day. As a connector between Finance, Tax Transformation, Finance Systems, IT, and Operations, you will help shape how platforms and tools work together to support a scalable, datadriven indirect tax operating model.

Why This Role Matters
  • Build a scalable indirect tax engine - You will design and execute recurring indirect tax compliance and accounting processes so Rivian can expand into new products, channels, states, and countries while staying compliant and audit-ready.
  • Turn tax data into decisions - By analyzing large, complex tax data sets, you will surface trends, risks, and savings opportunities that directly influence margins, cash flow, and operational choices across Finance and the business.
  • Modernize how tax work gets done - You will apply tax engines, ERP integrations, workflow automation, and AI tools to indirect tax journeys-from return preparation and reconciliations to invoice reviews and exception handling-reducing manual effort and error.
  • Embed tax into business growth - As a key partner to Procurement, Accounting, Operations, and external advisors, you will ensure indirect tax implications are understood and designed into new products, services, contracts, and market expansions from the start.
  • Strengthen controls and resilience - Through better documentation, audit support, and continuous improvement, you will help build an indirect tax environment that is transparent, well-controlled, and ready for rapid scale.

Responsibilities

Indirect Tax Compliance & Reporting
  • Own recurring indirect tax compliance for assigned jurisdictions, including preparing, reviewing, and filing monthly, quarterly, and annual returns (e.g., US sales and use tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST, personal property tax, and other nonincome taxes).
  • Coordinate data collection and validation with Accounting, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, Procurement, external tax consultants, and other stakeholders to ensure accurate and timely filings.
  • Maintain tax calendars, support payment processes, and ensure all statutory deadlines and filing requirements are consistently met.
  • Monitor indirect tax legislative and regulatory changes and help translate them into updated filing approaches, calendars, and internal guidance.
Indirect Tax Accounting, Analytics & Insights
  • Prepare and review monthly indirect tax accruals, reconciliations, and related journal entries in partnership with the broader Finance and Accounting teams.
  • Maintain and enhance standardized workpapers and reconciliation templates that can scale with Rivian's growth in volume, entities, and jurisdictions.
  • Analyze trends, variances, and anomalies in tax data to identify risk, savings opportunities, and process or control gaps, and propose concrete remediation actions.
  • Support forecasting and scenario analysis for indirect taxes, providing clear, data-backed explanations of historical drivers and forward-looking assumptions.
Tax Technology, Automation & AI Enablement
  • Partner with Tax Transformation, Finance Systems, and IT to optimize indirect tax engines and integrations across ERP, billing, procurement, and external tax engines (e.g., ONESOURCE, Vertex, Avalara, or similar).
  • Use AI-enabled tools (e.g., copilots, chat-based research tools, AI-driven analytics) to summarize complex tax legislation, accelerate tax technical research and documentation, and automate portions of data validation, exception handling, and invoice or transaction reviews.
  • Evaluate AI and automation outputs with professional skepticism, ensuring conclusions are well-supported, explainable, and compliant before they are relied upon.
  • Contribute detailed requirements and test cases for new automations, tax rules, and data quality checks, helping ensure solutions reflect real indirect tax workflows and edge cases.
Business Partnership, Planning & Transactions
  • Provide indirect tax input on new products, services, sales channels, and geographic expansions, outlining registration, taxability, and compliance implications.
  • Review contracts, purchase orders, and invoices for indirect tax impacts, and help design practical, reusable guidance and templates for Procurement and business partners.
  • Collaborate with Procurement and Operations to optimize exemption certificate management, tax coding decisions, and process handoffs that affect indirect tax outcomes.
  • Serve as a day-to-day partner to cross-functional teams, explaining indirect tax concepts in clear, non-technical language and aligning on decisions that balance compliance, customer experience, and operational simplicity.
Audit, Risk Management & Continuous Improvement
  • Prepare responses, schedules, and supporting documentation for indirect tax audits and inquiries; track audit status, issues, and outcomes, and help implement remediation and improvement plans.
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready documentation and clear narratives for key positions taken, including where AI and automation are used in the process.
  • Identify and implement process improvements that increase accuracy, reduce manual effort, strengthen controls, and eliminate avoidable demand across indirect tax work.
  • Document end-to-end processes, controls, and data flows and share best practices, training peers on tools, templates, and AI-enabled workflows that elevate the broader team.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Tax, or a related field.
  • 4-6 years of relevant indirect tax experience, preferably in a corporate tax department or public accounting firm with exposure to multistate US sales and use tax.
  • Strong working knowledge of indirect tax concepts, including nexus, taxability, exemptions, and documentation requirements.
  • Hands-on experience with indirect tax compliance, tax accounting, and reconciliations, including preparing and reviewing returns, accruals, and journal entries.
  • Comfort working with large data sets in Excel or similar tools; ability to structure, reconcile, and analyze data to identify issues and insights.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI or automation tools in a finance/tax context (e.g., AI copilots, chat-based research tools, AI-assisted analytics) and the ability to validate, refine, and document AI-assisted work.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical-thinking skills with high attention to detail and a bias toward action.
  • Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams across Finance, Operations, Legal, IT, and external tax advisors, balancing technical depth with practical guidance.
  • Clear and concise written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex tax topics for non-tax stakeholders.
  • Self-starter mindset with a continuous improvement orientation and comfort working in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in Tax, CPA, CMI, or equivalent professional certification.
  • Experience with global indirect taxes (e.g., VAT, GST/HST/PST) and cross-border transaction analysis.
  • Experience with tax engines or compliance platforms (e.g., ONESOURCE, Vertex, Avalara, or similar) and their integration with ERP, billing, and procurement systems.
  • Experience with BI/analytics tools or SQL to support deeper analysis and reporting.
  • Background in high-growth, multi-entity, or multi-jurisdictional environments, ideally in manufacturing, technology, or automotive/EV sectors.
